finds his tortoise.
Fielding and Kingshaw play like normal
children and have fun together.
Fielding understands why Kingshaw is
scared or Hooper.
Kingshaw trusts Fielding and feels safe even
when he sees things he is not sure of e.g. the

THINK: Why do you think Susan Hill has decided to include the character of Anthony
Fielding?
THINK: How does Warings compare with the Fielding’s farm?
Chapter 15: Isolation
2. Find FIVE quotations in this chapter to show Kingshaw’s increasing isolation.
a. Page 190: “He almost burst out at her in his fury at the unfairness of it, he wanted to
shout, … He said nothing.”
COMMENT
This shows how much he is unable to communicate with his mother. He knows that she
will not listen to him so he no longer bothers trying to tell her how he feels. This forces

WRITING ACTIVITY
Imagine that you are Kingshaw at the end of chapter fifteen. Write a diary entry where
you express your feelings about Hooper, Mr Hooper and your mother. Talk about your
fears about going to Hooper’s school. You could also refer to Fielding.
This is an empathic task so make sure you do the following:
- refer to key events in the novel
- adopt an appropriate voice (Kingshaw is eleven years old)
- use emotions and feelings as it is a diary entry
