TIPS ON ACCESSING MAINSTREAM SUBJECTS:
All subjects offered at the University of Stellenbosch can be found in the online yearbook:
http://www.sun.ac.za/university/jaarboek/
Mainstream subject codes
The codes will tell you when the module is offered (in the case of undergraduate modules only).
The code consists of three numbers. The first number tells you the year in which the module is
offered (in other words, the level at which it is offered). The second number tells you which
semester it will be lectured in. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 indicate a module taught in the first
semester, and 4, 5 and 6 indicate a second semester module. The number 7 or 8 indicates a
module that is taught over a whole year. The third number is irrelevant.
For example: English 348 is a third year module (3), offered in the second semester (4). The
codes of post-graduate courses however, are more complicated as the numbers don’t
correspond to the semesters it is taught in.
Language in which a mainstream subject is offered
The letters listed after each subject, A, E or T indicates the following... A = Afrikaans; E =
English; T = the so called “T-option”/bilingual classes, which means that in one lecture, 50% is
taught in Afrikaans and 50% is taught in English. Also (A & E), would mean that there are two
seperate classes for the same subject, an Afrikaans and an English class.
(*Please note that all IPSU courses are taught in English only, as the courses were specifically
designed for International students.)
The meaning of the codes (1.5L, 2T, 1S) for example, listed after each subject name would
mean “1 and a half lectures per week, 2 tutorial classes per week, 1 seminar per week”.

Workload & Credits
When studying as an ISEP student at Stellenbosch University, you are restricted to 60 credits
per semester. 1 USA credit = 2 ECTS credits = 4 RSA credits
The yearbook provides credits for each subject (in brackets).
Please note that during your first two weeks you can attend class with as many subjects as
you like, to get a feel for the subject. You may cancel any of them during this period. Please
note that during this period you can add any IPSU courses, but you cannot add a mainstream
course that you have not had approved prior to arriving at Stellenbosch. It is thus of importance
to list any possible mainstream subjects you may want to enrol for in your course request list.
Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Tanya Fouché, at
tfouche@sun.ac.za or +27 21 808 3543.
