Lesson Plan School Counselor: Activity: Goal Setting Grade(s) 9 Date: Quarter 3 ASCA Student Standards (Domain/Standard/Competencies): Academic Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the lifespan. A:A3.3 Develop a broad range of interests and abilities Academic Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college. A:B2.4 Apply knowledge of aptitudes and interests to goal setting Academic Standard C: Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community. C1.3 Understand the relationship between learning and work Career Standard A: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. C:A2.6 Learn how to write a résumé Personal/Social Standard A: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others. PS:B1.9 Identify long- and short-term goals Learning Objective(s): 1. Students will understand how to create goals and how to achieve them. 2. Students will be able to assess their own College and Career Readiness. 3. Students will understand the importance of extracurricular activities in relation to academic and career goals. 4. Students will know how to build a resume. Materials: Instructor’s computer, Projector, Student computers and internet access, 4 Handouts: College and Career Readiness Rubric, Interests & Activities handout (extracurricular activities), Service Learning handout, Pre/Post-test. Procedure: Objective 1: I do: Teach Goal + Path, and give directions on Goal-setting activity Students do: In pairs, students state their goals, per specific prompts (goal-setting activity handout) Objective 2: I do: Teach components of College and Career Readiness We do: As a class, we view YouTube videos on 21st Century Skills, and Academic Beliefs and Attitudes. Students do: Students, individually, complete their College and Career Readiness rubrics. Objective 3: I do: Teach about extracurricular activities – importance-of, examples, relation to academic & postsecondary goals. Students do: Students, individually, fill-in Co-curricular activities handout. Objective 4: I do: Teach about resumes, and give instructions on starting resume in Naviance. Students do: Log-in to Naviance and begin filling-in the resume builder tool. Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected? Process Data: This will be determined by attendance, participation in in-class activities, student completion of 2 handouts and Naviance resume, and student responses to discussion questions/prompts. Perception Data: This will be gathered through pre/post-tests. Outcome Data: This can be measured indirectly by longer-term graduation rates, post-secondary enrollment, and employment in fields related to their interests and abilities. Follow Up: The counselor will follow up with students who do not complete the lesson, are absent, or need extra support to finish the lesson by meeting with them either individually or in small groups.
