TMY Traditions of the Home – Cover Sheet
Tucson Meet Yourself announces an opportunity for public participation via a new cultural area called “Traditions of
Home.” Proposals will be accepted from local ethnic, occupational, and other folk groups, clubs, or associations,
traditional folk artists as well as from contemporary visual artists, independent curators, public folklorists, scholars, ethnic,
folk, and other community-based entrepreneurs, and museum or cultural center professionals.
Proposals will be accepted until August 15, 2010 for “installation-art” treatments in an area of 10’ x 10’.
By “installation” we mean recreated scenes, montages, dioramas, or other formats that combine, assemble, construct, or
duplicate in-site a space of everyday life, in this case a space that recalls any aspect of “home” and “traditions.” We
include in this idea, home decorations of all kinds. Proposals can incorporate traditional, heritage-based objects as well as
popular culture/contemporary influences. Use of electronic media is also allowed (home movies, etc.). Examples
appropriate for this TMY opportunity include:
 Nichos or other front yard/backyard decorations;
 Living or family room areas, reflective of particular cultural traditions (furniture, family photos, collectibles, special
appliances, souvenirs, wall hangings, window treatments, rugs, decorations);
 Found objects assembled in interesting ways that recall human stories;
 Cooking areas or cooking utensils (cookery) or eating areas and cultural styles of dining arrangements;
 Home altars (of any religious point of view, rooted in a person or a family’s cultural experience);
 Home workshops or hobby areas (sewing, ceramics, woodwork, etc.)
 Representations and/or interpretation of mixed cultural traditions in the same home and new interpretations of
“family” (inter-ethnic or inter-racial couples; LGBTQ families; foster families and adoption experiences; immigrant
and transnational families, etc.)
