ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated
entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to
coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global
environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the
international community for action. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information
(DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to stakeholders and partners, raising
environmental awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. UNEP/DCPI wishes to
create a roster of Translators to support the translation content for UNEP publishing. The
consultancy will be located/managed by DCPI at the Nairobi duty station.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The objective of this advertisement is to establish a roster of external Translators. The functions
described below are therefore generic. Specific assignments will only be shared with successful
roster candidates upon such assignments becoming available.
Under the supervision of the Head of the Publishing Unit and the guidance of the DCPI Division
Director, the consultant will perform the following duties:

Translate on a timely basis materials from English to one of the six UN languages
(Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian)

Ensure a high quality of translation work, reflecting an accurate portrayal of the meaning
found in the source material

Review work and point out factual inconsistencies, inconsistencies in arguments,
political nuances, faulty logic, and awkward or unclear passages and suggest solutions

Deliver a final translation that is in line with UNEP Publishing Guideline,

Provide the translated text in MS Word files; statistical tables might be delivered in MS
Excel.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications/special skills or knowledge:
Education:
Advanced university degree in linguistics – translation or
combination with at least five years’ work experience.
related field or a first degree in
Work Experience:
• Proven five years’ experience in translating high quality publications and information
material.
• Extensive experience in the environmental and scientific field.
• Significant experience in the international arena.
• Familiarity with the work of the UN.
Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post
advertised,
a
fluency
in
English
and
one
or
more
UN
languages
(Arabic/French/Chinese/Spanish/Russian) is required.
Other:
• Familiarity with the United Nations Editorial procedures is highly desirable.
• The applicant must be able to work with minimum supervision, while being an integral
part of
team involving members of staff from a wide range of disciplines. Strong organizational
skills & ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines is essential.
