CIHR Other: Evidence on Tap - Expedited Knowledge Synthesis
Expedited Knowledge Synthesis is a tool that accelerates all phases of synthesis
production – application, review, research, knowledge translation – to offer timely,
accessible and relevant evidence to decision makers. This funding opportunity will
support a Qualified Evidence On Tap Research Team to conduct an expedited
knowledge synthesis related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research. The review to support
the work of the Scientific Expert Working Group will focus on both diagnostic and
therapeutic issues related to the proposed Chronic Cerebro-Spinal Venous Insufficiency
(CCSVI) condition in MS patients.
The systematic review questions are:
 What is the evidence of the prevalence of extracranial venous malformation in
individuals with MS compared to individuals without MS?
 What is the evidence of the prevalence of abnormal cerebral venous drainage in
individuals with MS compared to individuals without MS?
 What is the evidence that abnormal variation in extracranial venous anatomy is
linked to abnormal cerebral venous drainage?
 What is the evidence regarding the reliability and validity of non-invasive testing
of extracranial veins (e.g. ultrasound, MR venography)?
 What is the evidence of the safety and efficacy of angioplasty of the extracranial
veins in patients with MS?
The synthesis should include:
 published and grey literature, including conference proceedings and abstracts;
 literature on living and deceased individuals (postmortem histology);
 a sexed-based and age-based analysis of the evidence where possible;
 analysis of the inter and intra-rater reliability of any of the diagnostic methods
included in the review;


quality appraisal of the evidence using appropriate quality appraisal instruments;
at a minimum, the review team will include relevant expertise in diagnosing
CCSVI and imaging of veins (ultrasound, MRI, etc), MS, MS outcome
measurement (MRI, functional status, etc), neurology, radiology, vascular
surgery, clinical epidemiology, biostatics, library science, and the science of
synthesis.

CIHR Fellowship: CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program
The primary goal of the CANADA-HOPE Scholarship Program is to further develop
international collaborative efforts between researchers. The short term goal is to enable
promising individuals to be mentored by prominent Canadian researchers. The long term
objective of the Program is to enable promising scientists and clinicians from Low and
Middle Income Countries (LMIC), as identified by the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) and the United Nations (UN), to be exposed to some of the
best science, laboratories and training environments in Canada. This round will focus on
sub continental South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
AMOUNT: The maximum amount awarded for a single award is $174,000 for up to four
years.

CIHR Catalyst Grant: HIV/AIDS (Community-Based Research)
The CIHR HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research (CBR) Program assists communitybased organizations, non-governmental organizations and institutions in developing the
knowledge necessary to carry out their HIV/AIDS work in the most effective manner, and
in creating expertise within these communities to conduct their own research. The aim
of this Catalyst Grant is to provide seed money, on a short-term basis, to support health
research activities which represent a first step towards the pursuit of more
comprehensive funding opportunities (e.g., operating grants).
AMOUNT: The maximum amount per grant is $ 33,000 for up to one year

CIHR: Knowledge Synthesis Grant
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support teams of researchers and
knowledge users to produce knowledge syntheses and scoping reviews that will
contribute to the use of synthesized evidence in decision-making and practice. This
funding opportunity will support two types of projects: knowledge syntheses and scoping
reviews.
Knowledge syntheses
All forms of knowledge synthesis are eligible, including systematic reviews, realist
syntheses, narrative syntheses, meta-analyses, meta-syntheses, meta-ethnography and
practice guidelines that synthesize evidence. Syntheses in this funding opportunity may
synthesize results from qualitative, quantitative or multi-method research. The types of
knowledge than can be synthesized are broad and can include empirical as well as
theoretical knowledge. All syntheses in this funding opportunity must assemble, analyse
and summarize knowledge. Standard protocols, handbooks and checklists exist to guide
the conduct of some syntheses, and A Guide to Knowledge Synthesis is available on
CIHR's web site. Applicants are encouraged to make use of and cite these resources
where appropriate.
Scoping reviews
Scoping reviews are exploratory projects that systematically map the literature available
on a topic, identifying the key concepts, theories, sources of evidence, and gaps in the
research. They are often preliminary to full syntheses, undertaken when feasibility is a
concern - either because the potentially relevant literature is thought to be especially
vast and diverse (varying by method, theoretical orientation or discipline) or there is
suspicion that not enough literature exists. These entail the systematic selection,
collection and summarization of existing knowledge in a broad thematic area for the
purpose of identifying where there is sufficient evidence to conduct a full synthesis or
where insufficient evidence exists and further primary research is necessary.
AMOUNT: The maximum amount awarded for a knowledge synthesis is $100,000 for
one year. The maximum amount awarded for a scoping review is $50,000 for one year.
