Biographical Sketch Of

John R. Moreland, M.D.

Dr. Moreland grew up in a small town in northern Louisiana. In addition to participating in school activities, he worked regularly in his father’s supermarket along with his four siblings and graduated with valedictorian honors from the local high school.

He graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in

Chemistry in 1968, and completed Baylor Medical School in 1972. He then came to

California and did a surgical internship at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center. For his orthopaedic residency, which he finished in 1977, he moved to UCLA where his interest in joint replacement surgery began. The UCLA Division of Orthopaedics has had a long-term interest in joint replacement surgery. After finishing the four year orthopaedic residency he spent an extra year as a fellow at UCLA in order to learn more about joint replacement surgery. A second year of fellowship in joint replacement surgery was spent in London, England with the famous English joint replacement surgeon, Mr. Michael Freeman. While in England, he was honored to observe the late Sir

John Charnley performing hip replacement surgery.

After completing the year-long fellowship in England, he was invited to join the UCLA full-time orthopaedic faculty specializing in joint replacement surgery. During the seven years in this capacity he participated in basic research in joint replacement surgery and received the Otto E. Aufrane award for the paper entitled “Viability and Cement Fixation of the Femoral Head in Canine Surface Replacement” along with several other researchers at UCLA.

In 1986, Dr. Moreland left the full-time faculty at UCLA to practice in Santa Monica. He is on staff at St. John’s Hospital. He maintains an association at UCLA as Assistant

Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Moreland has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1980. He became a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in

1982. He was honored to be a charter member of The Knee Society when it was organized in 1983. This is a small group of orthopaedic surgeons recognized for their interest in knee replacement surgery. In 1988, he was elected to membership in The Hip

Society, an exclusive organization of less than 100 members with particular interest in hip replacement surgery. His membership in both The Hip Society and The Knee Society is relatively unusual.

Dr. Moreland has published twenty-five papers in reviewed medical journals, most of which are about joint replacement surgery. He has also written chapters in several books about joint replacement surgery. In addition, he has published seventeen abstracts, mostly about joint replacement. He is recognized as a national authority on joint replacement surgery and frequently speaks at medical meetings.

Dr. Moreland has designed instruments to facilitate hip revisional surgery. These instruments aid surgeons in removing previously placed prostheses and bone cement.

The Moreland Revision Instruments are currently utilized in many of the major hospitals in this country. He has also developed similar sets of instruments to assist in knee replacement revisional surgery. Dr. Moreland also developed instrumentation to assist in removing prostheses that have previously been placed without cement. Because of activities in developing revisional instrumentation, Dr. Moreland is considered a national authority on hip and knee replacement revisional surgery. He has particular interest in this type of surgery which, because of its complexity, represents a significant challenge to surgeons.

Dr. Moreland has also participated in the design of a total knee prosthesis, along with other orthopaedic surgeons. The instrumentation to assist in the placing of this total knee implant was designed by Dr. Moreland.

Having been in practice since 1979, Dr. Moreland has done over 5,500 hip and 2,500 knee replacement surgeries. He currently performs over 400 hip or knee replacements annually with about 100 of these being revisional surgeries.
