Course Description.
The course will be organized into three parts.
Part 1 (Zubizarreta) We will present and examine works on the syntax and
prosody of Bantu languages and Romance (Italian and Spanish), with
particular attention to the effects of focus on prosodic phrasing. Time
permitting, we will also discuss Nuclear Stress and role in focusidentification, as well as deaccenting, in Germanic and Spanish. (Jan/Feb).
Part 2 (Simpson) Part two of the course will consider prosody-syntax
phenomena in (primarily) Asian languages, with four major areas of study:
(a) prosody, de-accenting and island constraints in Japanese and Korean, (b)
prosody and processing, including prosody in silent reading, (c) the
interactions of prosody and syntax in a tone language (Chinese) (d) prosody,
syntax and word order phenomena in head-final scrambling languages
(Turkish, Burmese)
Part 3 (Students): Students will do an oral presentation of an article of
their choice, relevant to their own research project. (April)
Final Paper: a research project in the area of the syntax/prosody interface
(due on final exam date).
