1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Deputy Director is responsible for the day-to-day, regionally assigned, management of the
statewide Nevada Industry Excellence (NVIE) program, including supervision of Project Managers in
southern Nevada. NVIE works directly with Nevada’s industrial companies to speed the flow of new
technology, information, best business practices, and workforce development by providing both direct
and referral services focused primarily on the manufacturing, construction and mining industries.
NVIE is the Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Manufacturing
Extension Partnership (NIST-MEP) for the State of Nevada. Specific sales goals must be met to
achieve NVIE cash flow requirements. Economic impact from each project is a requirement as
measured by client surveys as well. Additionally, the position is responsible for the supervision of the
technical program for multiple programs, projects and grants. The Deputy Director is also the key
representative of the statewide program for the Southern Nevada area of the state. The position
reports to the Director, NVIE and covers for the Director for the NIST-MEP Director’s update meetings
as needed.

enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage
first with heading and then bulleted information).

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
Nevada Industry Excellence is essentially functioning as a comprehensive “facilitating and consulting
business” within NSHE. In working with external clients and NVIE team members, the Deputy
Director is viewed as an experienced leader that helps their Project Managers achieve Nevada
Industry Excellence goals and objectives, while maintaining a positive relationship among partners,
providers, clients and the Nevada Industry Excellence team. Challenges typically can occur in
coordinating project schedules and resolving project complexities to a successful completion in a
timely fashion. For example unforeseen difficulties may set a project behind schedule. Also,
stakeholders’ schedules may present pressing challenges in order to meet certain funding deadlines.
Resourcefulness in helping Project Managers develop a solution will be needed to successfully
resolve such issues in order to keep the client happy and/or satisfy the funding requirements. In
addition, the Deputy Director is expected to assist the team in attaining project quota levels annually
which can be a challenge in itself.
Impact:
The decisions of the Deputy Director affect the relationship of the commercial sector with Nevada
Industry Excellence, NSHE, and NVIE partners. The decisions determine success in achieving NVIE
growth with positive impact on NSHE, the University, and Nevada’s economy. Positive client relations
are crucial for continued success of the Industrial Extension program and positive image that it brings
to the system. Mistakes made will cost Nevada Industry Excellence and the system money and could
feasibly jeopardize team members, client and partner relationships.
