Job Description Job Title: Tennis Supervisor Classification: Nonexempt Reports to: Camp Director Skyland Camp for Girls is an independent camp that has been owned and operated by the women of the same family since 1917. Located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Skyland has catered to five generations of young women and is honored to share its rich history with future leaders. Offering a wide variety of “traditional” camp activities, campers have extensive opportunities for creative and athletic achievement. Limited to just 65 campers per session, Skyland is committed to the individual camper, and the contribution that she can bring to camp life. For campers and counselors, lasting friendships are formed, and memories of camp days are never forgotten. Position Purpose: The Tennis Supervisor manages the Tennis Courts. This includes overseeing the physical operation of the facilities and equipment and the planning and supervision of Tennis activities. The Tennis Supervisor trains and manages activity counselors on and for the Tennis program. The Tennis Supervisor is also responsible for general administrative duties and supervision of campers. Essential Job Functions: 1. Plan, direct, and supervise a fun, high-quality Tennis program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers. Work with Head Counselor and Tennis counselors to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs. Evaluate abilities of campers and staff in relation to the Tennis program. Ensure delivery of creative Tennis activities. Evaluate the success of the Tennis program. 2. Train and supervise Tennis staff Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. Train Tennis instructors and other staff in their responsibilities related to the Tennis program, including training in safety and educational procedures. Supervise Tennis staff to provide a safe and high-quality program. Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures. Supervise the Tennis staff evaluation process. 3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the Tennis program area Maintain the Tennis equipment including but not limited to nets, racquets, balls, and courts. Ensure the security of the Tennis equipment and courts when not in use. Ensure that a daily check of the area and equipment is made for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. Keep the area free of hazards and debris. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment. Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory and store equipment for safety. 4. Perform general administrative duties and supervise campers and counselors to support the overall camp operation. As requested, drive vehicles (including 15-passenger vans) for camp-related business, including transportation of campers. Supervise campers on off-campus trips, including participation in all activities. Assist in regular operation of the camp office, infirmary, and kitchen, as necessary. Other Job Duties: Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Participate as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions Assist in the planning of any special events on, near or related to the Tennis program. Other duties may be assigned as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Training and experience in a teaching tennis to children. Ability to manage and supervise staff. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in varied conditions. The Tennis Supervisor is expected to create and maintain positive relationships with a variety of individuals, including, but not limited to: Parents on opening and closing days, as well as visitors during camp sessions Maintenance staff Counselors and other Program Specialists Health Care staff Food Services staff Business and Administrative staff Equipment Used: Tennis racquets, nets, balls, and materials and related maintenance equipment. A two-court asphalt tennis court. As a member of the general administrative staff, this staff member may also assist in areas such as kitchen, office, infirmary, and transportation. Equipment used may include: o Some maintenance, office, and kitchen equipment. o Basic first aid equipment and camper medications. o A range of vehicles, including golf carts and 15-passenger vehicles. Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience) Must be 21 years of age or older. Previous experience in development and delivery of youth tennis programs. Current certification in first aid, CPR and AED (or willingness to obtain before start date). Experience or current certification as a supervisor of an equivalent or similar environment desirable. Ability to interact positively with all age levels. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and model appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Physical endurance to walk/hike long distances and engage in activities requiring prolonged standing, bending, stooping, eye-hand coordination, & manual dexterity to manipulate equipment. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate orally and in writing. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Ability to safely and properly operate program equipment. Withstand daily exposure to sun, heat and cool night temperatures. Comfort with exposure to animals including horses, dogs, cats, as well as other camp life, including caterpillars, bugs, snakes, etc. Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with basic equipment and facilities. In the presence of campers, ability and willingness to eat food provided by the camp kitchen.
