Testing Your Cats for Feline Leukemia (FELV) and Feline AIDS (FIV)
Dear Client,
Congratulations on your new addition! Whether this four-legged family member
was given to you, or it’s that cute stray that has decided to call your house home, there is
some important information we have to tell you about—Feline Leukemia & Feline AIDS.
Feline Leukemia Virus (FELV) is one of the most common & destructive of all
cat viruses. Although your pet may not be showing clinical signs, 20% of all cats/kittens
test positive. Kittens may become infected while still in the womb or when the infected
mother removes the umbilical cord during nursing. It may also spread by saliva during
catfights, grooming, or mating and can be spread through blood, urine, & feces. 25% of
all infected cats die within 1 year, and 75% of infected cats die within 3 years.
Feline AIDS Virus (FIV), an Immune Deficiency Syndrome, is also destructive in
cats. It is passed through the bite or scratch of an infected cat. Unlike FELV, it is not
spread through casual contact.
There is NO cure for either disease, but there is a preventative vaccine for the
Feline Leukemia Virus that can be given BEFORE exposure to the disease. Unfortunately
there is no recommended vaccine for the Feline AIDS Virus.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND TESTING for the above diseases BEFORE
INTRODUCING THIS PET TO YOUR HOME, especially in multi-cat households.
