Job Description: MARC Advisement Coordinator Brooklyn College, a comprehensive college and part of the City University of New York, seeks an Advisement Coordinator for freshmen, sophomore, and transfer student initiatives in our MARC program (Minority Access to Research Careers, funded by the National Institutes of Health). The MARC program is intended to increase the number of high-achieving students from groups under-represented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences who attain research doctoral degrees. The MARC Research Introduction Program (MRIP) provides educational enrichment and support services to students who are freshmen, sophomores or transfers students interested in studying the natural or behavioral science at Brooklyn College. MRIP students have an intent to major in a science, and are interested in the possibility of biomedical and behavioral research careers. The MRIP program also provides opportunities to become involved with research in the biomedical and behavioral sciences and provides additional academic support throughout their time in college. The program stresses making students responsible for their academic progress as members of a community of students with similar goals, and equipping them with the skills that they need to succeed in college-level science majors. Finally, the MARC program helps students to establish clear professional and career goals and the skills to be successful in doctoral-level graduate programs. The College is seeking a creative and enthusiastic team member to work with the Program Directors to organize and supervise program activities, foster community building, and work directly with the freshman, sophomore and transfer MARC students on academic and career advisement. The MARC program has numerous collaborations with college offices and other externally-funded programs with similar goals, so coordination of activities with other programs will also be required. Duties and responsibilities include: Academic and career advisement of MRIP students, including assistance in course selection and registration Assistance in organizing and securing mentors for group and individual research projects Collaborating with faculty and collaborative partners to foster the success of underrepresented students in the sciences Hiring and training peer tutors doing peer-assisted, supplemental instruction workshops for the program Organization of academic and social events to support the MARC community Cooperation with the junior/senior MARC fellows component of the MARC program Background required: Experience working directly one-on-one with college-aged students, particularly with students in their first two years of college Demonstrated expertise working with diverse students At least one year of program administration experience, ideally in undergraduate science, research, or enrichment programs A bachelor’s degree, ideally in the sciences, (masters degree a plus) Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and computer skills A strong commitment to the goals of the MARC program This is a multi-year, full-time position, with good benefits, with the Research Foundation of CUNY, working at Brooklyn College.
