Agriculture Rankings by State and Commodity (http://www.nass.usda.gov/Data_and_Statistics/index.asp) U.S., state, and county level agricultural statistics for many commodities and data series.
Business Week – Journal - Includes the ten best-paid trade group chiefs, the world's best investments through
funds, the largest tax hikes since 1980, sales statistics, etc. Available through ABI/Inform (ProQuest Direct) or
Business Source Premier (EBSCO).
Business Expenses Survey (http://www.census.gov/csd/bes/) - Provides periodic national estimates on operating
expenses for merchant wholesale, retail trade, and selected service industries
Census Bureau Economic Information (http://www.census.gov/econ/www/) - Index of Economic Information
available from the Census. Includes the County Business Patterns, the Economic Census, and Enterprise
Statistics among others.
County Business Patterns (http://www.census.gov/epcd/cbp/view/cbpview.html) - This annual series includes a
separate report for each State. The divisions of the economy covered are agricultural services, forestry, and
fisheries; mining; contract construction; manufacturing; transportation and other public utilities; wholesale trade;
retail trade; finance, insurance, and real estate; and services.
Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) (http://www.bls.gov/cpi/) - "A measure of the average change over time in the
prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services."
Department of Commerce (http://www.commerce.gov/) - Provides market research and business data. From the
latest economic indicators, to trade, small businesses and job opportunities information.
Economic Indicators.gov (http://www.economicindicators.gov/) - Provides timely access to the daily releases of
key economic indicators from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau.
Enterprise Statistics (http://www.census.gov/csd/ent/ ) – The data was collected in the Economic Censuses.
Includes consolidated company data (sales, employment, payroll, form of organization and enterprise industry
classification), supplementary data for large companies (inventories, assets, fringe benefits, capital and research
and development (R&D) expenditures, and depreciation) and data for auxiliaries (sales, employment and payroll,
billings, inventories, capital and R&D expenditures, and selected purchased services).
Forbes – Journal - Includes statistics such as "the 200 best small companies",”the 500 largest private companies"
or "400 richest people in America". Available through ABI/Inform (ProQuest Direct) or Business Source Premier
(EBSCO).
Fortune – Journal - Includes the Global 500, company reputation ranking, Industry snapshots, and the median
return on assets for the Fortune 500 companies, and much more. Available through ABI/Inform (ProQuest Direct)
or Business Source Premier (EBSCO).
Producer Price Indexes (PPI) (http://www.bls.gov/ppi/) -- Contains indexes that measure the average change
over time in selling prices received by domestic producers of goods and services. Includes Industry and
Commodity Data.
Small Business Statistics and Ownership:
Characteristics of Business Owners (CBO) (http://www.census.gov/csd/cbo/) - Provides the only national data
available for comparing selected economic, demographic, and sociological characteristics among minority, women,
nonminority male, and all business owners and their businesses.
Nonemployer Statistics (http://www.census.gov/epcd/nonemployer/) - Summarizes the number of establishments
and sales or receipts of businesses without paid employees that are subject to federal income tax. Most
nonemployers are self-employed individuals operating very small unincorporated businesses, which may or may
not be the owner’s principal source of income.
The Survey of Business Owners and Self-Employed Persons (SBO) (http://www.census.gov/csd/sbo/) Provides unique information about the characteristics of American business owners and their business activities. It
is a sample survey taken every 5 years as part of the economic census. The SBO publications combine survey and
census data, and provide statistics that describe the composition of U.S. businesses by gender, race, and ethnicity.
Additional statistics include owner's age, education level, veteran status, and primary function in the business;
family- and home-based businesses; types of customers and workers; and sources of financing for expansion,
capital improvements, or start-up.
Statistics of US Businesses (SUSB) (http://www.census.gov/csd/susb/susb03.htm) – Includes key economic data
such companies establishment’s statistics, employment and annual payroll.
Financial Statistics:
Annual Capital Expenditures (ACES) (http://www.census.gov/csd/ace/) - Provides detailed and timely
information on capital investment in new and used structures and equipment by nonfarm businesses. The
survey is based on a sample of approximately 46,000 companies with employees and approximately 15,000
companies without employees.
Business Expenses Survey (BES) (http://www.census.gov/csd/bes/) – Provides periodic national estimates on
operating expenses for merchant wholesale, retail trade, and selected service industries.
Information and Communication Technology Survey (ICT) (http://www.census.gov/csd/ict/) – Collects
investment figures related to technology falling below a company's capitalization threshold. This survey is
sent to a sample of approximately 46,000 private non-farm employer businesses operating in the United
States.
Quarterly Financial Report (QFR) (http://www.census.gov/csd/qfr/) – Statistics on the financial position of U.S.
corporations. Based upon a sample survey, the QFR presents estimated statements of income and retained
earnings, balance sheets, and related financial and operating ratios for manufacturing corporations with assets of

statistics. New tables include data on health care expenditures, ownership of mutual funds, computer use,
results of the 1997 agriculture, and mail order catalogue sales.

Population, Housing, Economic and Geographic Data

ECON 97 Report Series (CD-ROM Government publication, call number C3.277: C) – Statistical data on
retail trade and wholesale trade; service industries; transportation, communications, and utilities; financial,
insurance, and real estate industries; manufactures; mineral industries; and construction industries. Also find
enterprise statistics and statistics for minority- and women-owned business. Requires quick set-up, fairly easy
to navigate tables.
Regional Economic Accounts (http://www.bea.gov/bea/regional/data.htm) – Includes state and local
personal income, Gross State Product (GSP), and local area personal income (aggregated). GSP = the value
added in production by the labor and capital in a state.
Sourcebook ZIP CODE Demographics 2000 (Print resource) - Includes all residential and non-residential
U.S. ZIP Codes. Data includes number of firms and number of employees, spending potential indices for
twenty product and service categories.
Commercial Atlas & Marketing Guide (print resource) – Find demographics of metropolitan areas, including
population trends, population, income, and sales by county.
State Data Center Program (http://www.census.gov/sdc/www/) - Program between the US Census Bureau
and state governments. Portal to sources of demographic, economic, and social statistics at the state level.
Objective is to make census information and data available to the public through state agencies, universities,
libraries, and local governments.

Current Population Survey (http://www.bls.census.gov/cps/cpsmain.htm) – Monthly survey of approximately
50,000 households, by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Designed to provide information on specific
characteristics of the U.S. labor force. Data includes employment, earnings, and hours of work, among others,
organized by demographics
Regional Labor Information (http://www.bls.gov/bls/regnhome.htm) – From the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
find regional statistics to the city level.
National income and product accounts of the United States (http://www.bea.gov/bea/dn1.htm) – Includes
142 NIPA summary tables, and national income and product accounts (NIPA) for the period between 1929
and 1998. NIPA tables contain many of the key variables which describe the health of the economy.

analysis. Annual estimates of trade in services and of sales of services in international markets through U.S.
and foreign affiliates of multinational companies.
The World Factbook (http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html) – Electronic version is free
from the Central Intelligence Agency. Data available for most countries. Includes the map and flag,
geography, people, government, economic, communication, transportation, military, and transnational issues.
