The Ark Veterinary Practice 41 Connaught Road, Fleet Hampshire. GU51 3LR : 01252 616185 Cat Castrate (Neutering) Your cat has had surgery today and below is some points which will answer some of the questions you may have about his recovery. ANAESTHETIC Your cat should be back to normal within 24-48 hours, but will need to be kept quiet and warm this evening. Water should be available at all times. A small area of hair may have been clipped from one or both legs and /or the neck, don’t worry this will soon grow back. This is to allow administration of the anaesthetic, and for the collection of blood samples. A small coloured pressure bandage may be present on the front leg; if so then this can be removed 30 mins-1 hour after you get your cat home. FEEDING You will have been given a recovery pack containing an easily digestible food. This should be offered to your cat little and often for this evening. If not, a home cooked meal of chicken and rice, white fish or scrambled egg can be offered. EXERCISE Your cat should be kept indoors for at least 24-36 hours. If a collar has been fitted then your cat should stay inside for 3-4 days until this can be removed. WOUND CARE Please keep an eye on your cat’s wounds. If you notice any problems such as swelling, discharge or redness please contact the surgery for further advice. No sutures have been placed but it is very important your cat does not interfere with or lick his wound. If licking is observed a special collar can be fitted to prevent this; please contact the surgery. If the collar is needed it should be kept on for 3-4 days following surgery. FOLLOW-UP He has no stitches to be removed and unless you are concerned about his recovery, we do not need to examine him post-operatively. If your cat has had a microchip inserted today please book an appointment with the nurse for 10-14 days time for him to have his microchip rescanned. If you have any concerns or queries please do not hesitate to contact the surgery
