John Richard Barnes was born July 28, 1833, in Sandy, Bedfordshire, England, to William Barnes and Elizabeth Jeffries. He married Emily Shelton in 1853, the same year they came to the United States, eventually arriving in Kaysville, Utah. He later married Elizabeth Geaves and Emily Stewart. Barnes owned a co-op and other businesses, including a bank (the accounts of the businesses he founded are chronicled). From April 30 to June 22, 1888, Barnes was incarcerated for the practice of plural marriage; he was pardoned by President Grover Cleveland. Barnes died January 21, 1919, at his home in Kaysville. 1. The log cabin in which David spent his first seven years is now on the property of the Syracuse Museum.
