Short presentation of Somes Pulp&Paper Mill
The town Dej is situated in the N-V of the Transylvania, on the bank of the Somes River and near
some important forest basins.
The Pulp and Paper Mill was commissioned in 1963 and from beginning became famous on the
market due to the products quality, services and safety collaboration.
In 1990 with the passage to the market economy the society founded itself as a
Joint-stock company named SC Somes SA, taking over the whole patrimony of the former Pulp
and Paper Mill.
Since 1990 till 2000 Romanian State owned Somes.
Hovis GmbH Austria won the auction and on June 2000 bought the main corporate stock from
FPS (State Property Fund – 70%).
In 2004 the owner became SCR Grup –Romania, one of the biggest industrial groups from our
country.
The main activity object of the Somes Dej is the production of bleached/unbleached
pulp and paper.
SC Somes SA Dej is the only Romanian company that still works for pulp production.
The capacities are: 42,000 to/year paper and 70,000 to/year pulp. The main row material is
softwood for producing the long fiber, which is used in paper preparation .
S.C. SOMES S.A. Dej has implement and certificate a Quality and Environmental Management
System according with DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000 and DIN EN ISO 14001:1996
In the future the intention is to adopt the new requirements of DIN EN ISO 14001:2004 and to
implement the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Systems according to OHSAS
18001:1999.
Presently the operating plants are:
Wood Preparation Plant, where have place all the processes for preparing of wood chips, at the
dimensions and the quality needed in the digestion process.

1965 – round wood line I , at the same time with the old pulp line, partial dismounted now.
1973- round wood line II
Pulp Fabrication Line (1973) , with a designed capacity of 70.000 to/year softwood bleached
pulp .
Digestion Plant(1973) , with the designed capacity of 70.000 to/year natural pulp .
This capacity is gift by the project of supplying company – METEX – Finland.
The digestion is a continuous sulfate process, in the Kamyr vessel.
Pulp Screening Plant ( 2001).
It is a new and modern plant, very efficient and non-polluting, completely automated, supplyied
of Black-Clawson –France.
Pulp Washing Plant (1973)
The washing of pulp is made on 3 rotation filters and partially on the bottom of Kamyr digester.
Bleaching Plant and Pulp Fine Screening (1973)
The bleaching process has a conventional technology, the stages being with chlorine, chlorine
dioxide, hypochlorite as bleaching agents.

Pulp Dewatering Machine (1973), with a capacity of 60.000 to/year (1973) , where is made a
dewatering of pulp up to a dryness of 70-75 % . Finally are obtainig the pulp bales.
(180-200 kg)
 Paper Machine has designed capacity of 42.000 to/year , with the gram between
50-140 g/m2 . The machine started in 1966 (NEYRPIC-France) .
In 1977 the machine was modernized by CENTRAL ADAMS-Italy . It was a new modernization
in 1994 (process computer) in cooperation with MEASUREX-Austria.
The row material for paper fabrication is the own softwood pulp -in percentage of
100-60% and hardwood sulfate pulp from outside – in percentage of 0-40%.
The new modernization of paper machine
Is designed to be made in two stages, in the period of 2005-2006
In the first step (September 2005) – was modernized the next equpment:

 Pick-up system for presses section

Soda Salts Recovery Plant, commissioned in 1965, supplied by Babcock-France.
In 1994 was made a capital repairing of recovery boiler.
Bleaching Agents Preparation and Stocking (Cl2, ClO2, NaOCl,). The plant commissioned
in 1965 and was supplied by Krebs-France.
In the frame of this plant was modernized one electrolysis line (10 cells) in 1994, with Krebs
Company.
Thermo-Electrical Power Plant ( electric energy and steam )
It was started 1965 , and in 1973 was completed. The equipment supplied from our country.
Waste Waters Treatment Plant , from all plants of the mill
In 1965 started the mechanical treatment stage, in 1976 was commissioned the biologic
treatment stage and in 1988 the plant was completed with other equipment.
Waters Treatment Plant, that supplies the drink water for industrial platform and for Dej
Town, as well the industrial waters.
This plant started in 1965 , it was completed in 1976 and in 1990 it was modernized by
purchasing of the ozone generator .

Air emissions
Principal air emissions from the process of pulp product are gases with sulphur content, nitrogen
oxides, chlorine, dust, gases from thermo-electrical plant and wood waste boiler .

Water emissions.
The waste waters from Somes pulp plants are treated in a physical-chemical treatment plan, then
in a biological treatment plant and evacuated in Somes River.
The waste waters from paper plant are treated only in a mechanical stage and evacuated in Somes
River.
The values of waste water parameters are request by Permit nr.933/2004 emitted by National
Administration Romanian Waters.

Dej , Romania
Presently Somes has it own landfill located near the right bank of Somes River at 3 Km
from town Dej.
The landfill is devide in two zones A and B . In the A zone are storage the liquid wastes and in the
B zone , the solid wastes.
Landfill capacity:
- Area:  15.0 ha
- Total volume: 600 000 m3
- Used volume:  400 000 m3
As the new romanian reglementations till 2009 the landfill must be close. So, Somes must
open a new ecological landfill till then.
S.C. SOMES S.A DEJ – IPPC Plant
The IPPC Directive 96/61/EC din 24.09.1999 regarding the prevent, the reduce and integrated
control of pollution was adopt in Romanian legislation and Somes Dej is situated under the
incidence of it because is a producer of pulp from wood and paper under 20 000 t/year.
Presently Somes is in procedure for obtaining the Environmental Integrated Permit as the
requested of the Directive.
The emissions in the environmet from Somes plants are aut off BAT recomandation and other
legal requirements so it was constitute an Conformation Program witch content the measures and
works necessary to aliniate to the requirements .
