Biomass is defined as the “total dry weight of an organism”. In other words, if you dehydrated an
organism—took out all of the water—biomass would be the weight of what remains.
Total human biomass = 100,000,000 tonnes (That is, 100,000,000 metric tons or about 220,400,000,000
pounds.)
Total biomass of all organisms = 2,000,000,000,000 tonnes (or about 4,408,000,000,000,000 pounds)
So, human beings represent about 0.00005% of the biomass on Earth.
If the sun can provide enough energy to fuel the remaining 99.99995% of organisms on Earth, why do
we not generate all of our electricity and other powers from solar energy?
