Worksheet 1 : Family History
History is not just about kings and queens, famous women and men, or battles and
treaties.
It is also about common people, such as you and your family.
Families may be large or small. Your relatives are the members of your family.
Family members may live together or spread across long distances to settle in different
cities and countries. Sometimes family members do not even know each other.
Family connections also go back through time. If all our ancestors1 were able to keep
good records, theoretically2 we can trace3 our family history all the way back to the
time when humans first appeared on earth!
A family tree shows how members of a family are related to each other.
It provides a
lot of information.
Look at the table below. Do you have these relatives in your family? Put a tick in the
box if you do, and write down in the next box how many are still alive. Add up the
total number in the last box. (No definite answer)

Although your relatives may spread across long distances to live in different parts of the
world, you all belong to the same family.
Family members also spread through time. A family tree shows best how one member is
related to another.
