NEWSLETTER UPDATE:
We have found it difficult if not impossible to put the
newsletter with all the pictures on the website.
Therefore, the newsletter website will have a small
selection of pictures but the full newsletter will be in
the clubhouse. Please don’t remove the newsletter
from the clubhouse.
NEW BOARD MEMBER: CHARLENE LONG
At our July 24 Meeting, the
AGCC Board of Directors
appointed a new board
member. We would like to
welcome Charlene Long to
the
2014
Board
of
Directors. She has a wealth
of knowledge from her previous involvement on
the Board of Directors. She is also a Past
President. Welcome to the board and thank you
for serving, again.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE:
“WE ARE HERE TO HEAR YOU”
In the July Newsletter, we asked members to
register and attend a planning seminar on July
21 at 7:00 PM. We had very few people register
for the meeting. So few that we could not
logically hold a meeting. I believe that the
membership is still interested in the future of
the club and planning for the future. I also
believe that the middle of July may be a bad
time for members, however, this time was
chosen to allow us to try to implement some of
these ideas for the following year. Another time
will be set up later to try again.
In the meantime if you have any concerns or
issues. Please feel free to contact any board
member. We are here to hear you.

TIP FROM THE PROFESSIONAL ON
COURSE MANAGEMENT:
A common mistake made by
golfers while playing a
round happens on the tee
box. To avoid the trouble
side of a particular hole they
tee their ball up on the side
of the teeing area farthest
away from the trouble. This actually increases your
chances of finding the trouble. The easiest example
is on #9 on our course. The trouble is on the left and
the room or preferred bail out is to the right. Always
tee the ball up on the left side of number 9 tee
closest to the trouble side and hit away from the
trouble. This will save you valuable strokes.

In July, we had two organized ladies nights – the
first two weeks we could not have any planned
events, as it was Canada day and then the “kilted
eve”! On July 15, we had a pizza and wing night
with a ladies “resale” on golf goods after. We had
48 women and raised $230 for our continued
renovations.
Glen DeCoste from DeCoste
Interiors donated most of the paint for the outside
ladies washroom. We have asked Mike if he can
provide the labor required to paint it! Thank you
to all who donated to our sale. – we have a few
unsold items and will set this sale up on a future
ladies night .
On July 22 we had a nine hole game followed by
pot luck provided by our ladies.
We are looking forward to hosting the 2-ball
women’s Provincial in Antigonish on Tuesday
July 29 – thanks to Jean D’entremont for
organizing a BBQ with local entertainment on
July 28th (day before) after their practice round with DD service provided !! Volunteers are needed
and appreciated to help out during this
competition.
Home and home hosted by Abercrombie will be
July 31 and then back at Antigonish on Aug 7th.
I cannot believe I am writing this but we are
currently making plans for final ladies night –
September 2! Scrambles begin September 9th
It is nice to see some “young ladies” and future
golfers participating in our junior program.
Thanks to all who make our golfing experience
enjoyable!!
Any concerns, comments or
suggestions gratefully received !!

GREENS REPORT: MIKE MACLELLAN
Summer finally arrived. It was not long ago when
it was 4 degrees in the middle of the day. In that
light we finished our second app of fertilizer on
the fairways and I believe we are accomplishing
what we set out to do.
You may have noticed the spots on # 3, 9 and 18
greens. This is called LDS explained in an earlier
blog. I treated but did not water it in enough.
Other than looking ugly, there is no permanent
damage. They will look better in a few days.
When summer mode is on, we concentrate on the
maintenance first and little jobs second. The
priority in July will be twofold. Drainage on 6, 13
and some odd jobs here and there, and the
whipper snipping of the course, time permitting.
Finally a positive outcome. An overflow pipe was
put in on # 15 pond, as I was tired of regulating
the water levels. The positive part is that it allows
water flow thus ridding us of the scum on the top
of the water.
Well we are in the depths of summer and pumping
water at a tremendous rate. The average went up
into the low 190,000s so I thought maybe we can
do the fairways every second day which we
started July 11th.The fairways use up to 110,000
gallons per night., It seems to be working bringing
our 2 day average down to 135,000 gallons which
is comfortable. The well on average pumps
150,000 gallons per 24 hours so when we get over
that we are living off surface water in our ponds.
The lesson is maybe you do not need as much
water as you think .I am going to extend this to
our approaches which are wet # 13,14 a prime
example,
I had an experience of the good members who
care and give extra to the club, first when I came
in on Sunday July 6th after Arthur. The well and
the pump house were checked. A surge knocked
out our little transfer pump in the pond on the left
of 18 which transfers the water to the pond on the
right at a high rate of 200,000 gallons per day.
Anyway, the call goes out to Roger Knocton, he
shows up Monday gives the prognosis. The next
day the pump is repaired but will not start. Roger
checks it out, a blown contactor. He runs down
town gets a new one, we are up and running. The
panic is over as Roger comes to the rescue. The
Second example that same weekend one of our
garage doors was broken. Gordon Beaton comes
in with the parts and steel for the bottom of the
door spends three hours of his time fixes it,
balances it and does not charge us either. I feel
these people must be acknowledged. They realize
our budget is small and are willing to help us.
THANK YOU Roger and Gordon!
We had a narrow escape today, David accidently
backed off the forward tee on # 17 and rolled the
mower, thankfully nothing happened to him. The
machine was damaged but can be repaired.

From the Junior Corner: BRIAN BOUDREAU
Plan your shot before you get to your ball.
The junior program
clinics have
been
having some great
turnouts
with
53
showing up for our
last clinic. Our next
clinic will be held on
Thursday, July
31st
rather than Tuesday,
due to the Woman's Provincial 2 ball. We have had
great success this year with our enrollment as last
year we had 36 junior players in 2013 and this year
we have 61 kids. This is a 70% increase from last
year. We had 53 kids last clinic, which means an
87% attendance rate for our last clinic.
August5th- regular clinic
August 12th- Bring a Friend Day of golf- this was
very successful last year and the kids that came
would get a free clinic as well as a hot dog and
beverage.
August 16th/17th- Club Championship for juniors
will take place on this date for kids 13 and over. Kids
12 and under will have their tournament date on
September
2nd
starting
at
10am.
August 19th- The Junior Pepsi Challenge will take
place on this date and Ed will be promoting it with
the NSGA and to date after speaking to 10 different
courses there are only 2 junior invitational
tournaments in the province as far as I know. It
might be something that could be a money maker in
the future with the right amount of promotion. The
cost will be $10 for members and $25 for nonmembers which would include a BBQ and drink with
their round.
August 26th- Last clinic

please contact Brian Boudreau at 863-0801 or

Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine
your yardage and make your club selection before it
is your turn to play. Very often, you can do this while
others are playing, without disruption. If you take
your glove off between shots, have it back on before
it is your turn to play. Even a small step like this
saves time.
Mixed: Murray Williams Clan Ranald
The Murray Williams Clan Ranald was held on July
6th. Sixty players took part in the annual tournament.
We congratulate Matt & Gerry Whitehead - the 2014
Champions.

Our next Tournament is Scotland vs. the World. This
is one of our regular Mixed Tournaments using the
Mixed Pinehurst format with added incentive of
playing for either Scotland or the World. Scotland
holds a 2 to 1 edge on the first three years of
tournament The World is vowing to make it even this
year. Deadline for entry is August 6th.
Our last tournament of the year is on September 7th
(Fall Fair Finale). The format for the tournament is a
Mixed Pinehurst.
MYTH OR FACT:
MYTH: When your ball, stance
or swing is interfered with by a
cart
path
(immovable
obstruction), you always take
relief on the side farthest away
from
the
hole.
FACT: You have to locate the
nearest spot off the cart path that
allows you to stand and swing
without interference and is not
nearer the hole than the ball's
location. That spot could be on
either side of the cart path
depending on your ball's position and the stroke you
intend to make for your next shot. Once you
determine where that spot is, you're allowed to drop
within one club-length of that spot, no closer to the
hole.
IMPLICATION:
th
If your shot on the 6 hole finishes on the cart path
beside the green, you get relief from the cart path.
The closest relief may be on the far side of the cart
path in the long grass because the green side would
be closer to the hole.
Tee It Forward (RCGA web site)
“Tee It Forward”- unless you are
consistently able to reach greens in
regulation from the back tees. You
should “Tee it Forward”.
In other words, play from a set of
tees that is comfortable for you – one
where you are more likely to hit lofted
irons into greens instead of hybrids
or fairway woods. It is acceptable for
players in the same group to play
from different tees. You should not make your
decision based only upon you handicap but on the
playability of the course for you.
Membership:
Once again, this year we will be selling half year
memberships starting August 1st. Rates will be
available at the Pro-shop and on the web site.
