Run Description Psychiatry Registrar 1 COLLECTIVE EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT The following run description is in accordance with the conditions set out in the current Resident Doctors’ Association & District Health Boards Multi Employer Collective Agreement. 2 TRAINING POST Northland District Health Board Registrar positions are recognised as training posts by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. As such, all stipulations specified by the College with regard to supervision, assistance, equipment and other standards are complied with. 3 PLACE OF WORK The place of work is based on the community or hospital setting of the run. Community runs are all integrated which means that the work place is based in the community with some work in the Mental Health Unit at Whangarei Hospital. 4 CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES and WORK SCHEDULES Responsible to: Clinical Head of Department Mental Health Services Other Consultants The registrar is accountable to the supervising psychiatrist of the run for clinical matters. On call they are under the supervision of the consultant on call. They have monitoring and support regarding training requirements with the Registrar Training Coordinator. Clinical responsibilities to include: The assessment and treatment of patients that are referred to the service with which they are working Development of comprehensive management plans for their patients – this could include biological, psychological and rehabilitation strategies as well as risk management and relapse prevention Liaison with family / whanau as part of providing comprehensive care Liaison with NGO and primary health care services as appropriate To be aware of cultural issues and liaise with cultural support people and services that may be involved in a patient’s care To identify and develop plans for substance abuse issues for a patient To document accurate and appropriate notes To work as part of a multidisciplinary team To actively seek advice and discuss assessment, management and ethical issues of concern with the supervising psychiatrist To assist with crisis assessments and admissions as required and appropriate for patients enrolled with the service To assist with continuity of care for the inpatients of the team as negotiated with the supervising consultant To attend teaching and educational secessions both as part of the registrar training program and locally run program To participate in matters related to the Mental Health Act as appropriate for level of seniority and under the supervision of the consultant psychiatrist Outside the ordinary working hours, when rostered, Registrars will be available to assess and manage psychiatric inpatients or patients in the community requiring psychiatric assessment or advice 5 PATIENT CARE and SERVICE DELIVERY RESPONSIBILITIES As determined by the Clinical Head of Department Mental Health Services, having regard to the service needs and the requirement of the specialty. 6 PROVISION FOR TRAINING / EDUCATION Adequate provision to be made to meet requirements for trainees of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, as well as ongoing education and development of skills. Provisions: 1. Supervision as per RANZCP Training Bylaws. 2. Reserved time during normal working hours for attendance at tutorials and inservice education – This will include attendance at the Auckland Regional Psychiatric Training Centre based in Auckland as part of the regional training scheme for day release teaching for two x 12 week semesters. 3. Attendance and participation at: Psychiatrists, Medical Officers and Registrars meeting 1030-1200 Group Psychotherapy Meeting Registrar Training Coordinator Meeting Grand Round 1240-1330 Tuesday, fortnightly weekly as rostered weekly as rostered Friday 7 ASSESSMENT and PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL Ongoing training assessment and performance appraisal of registrar as required by the College will be made by specialist staff and the Registrar Training Coordinator. The supervising consultant will provide a written report to the registrar at the end of each three monthly period. This report shall be confidential to the trainee, Registrar Training Coordinator and the Director of Registrar Training and will be available for inspection by other parties only with the written approval of the registrar. A six monthly review of performance of the registrar on behalf of Northland District Health Board will be conducted by the supervising Consultant Psychiatrist. 8 RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TRAINING and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OTHER STAFF. Registrar will participate in education of other staff as negotiated between the Registrar and supervising Consultant Psychiatrist. Teaching will be designed to fulfil learning goals of the registrar as well as for the benefit of the recipients. This may include: Teaching of House Officers Teaching of nursing staff. Presentations within the MDT 9 RESEARCH and REVIEW ACTIVITIES Research Participation in and evaluation of Research is considered an important part of registrar training and duties. Review Registrar will participate in clinical audit and quality assurance activities. This will be subject to their level of seniority in training and consistent with their goals of progress through the fellowship programme. 10 OTHER REGISTRAR AND SPECIALIST COVER Registrars will be requested to cover absence of other senior and junior staff in certain circumstances, viz Cover for absence on annual/sick/conference/exam/course leave Cover for Specialist will be limited, providing that registrars will not be called upon to perform duties beyond their experience and the proportion of unsupervised work will not exceed that recommended by the College At all times when registrars are working in the absence of their supervising consultant psychiatrist an alternative consultant psychiatrist will be identified who can be actively available for the registrar as required. 11 HOURS OF WORK Rostered Duties Ordinary day time hours will be between 0800-1700 The Registrar will participate in a 1:5 roster. The Registrar will be rostered to work 5 long days in a 5 week period between the hours of 0800-2300 on site. The Registrar will be rostered to work one full weekend, Saturday and Sunday, in a 5 week period between the hours of 0800-2230 on site. 2.5 Hours of overtime per week has been included to cover any unforeseen circumstances as well as 2.3 hours for travel to required teaching sessions.
