SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS
Over fifteen years of diversified research, teaching and professional experience in various civil
engineering disciplines with emphasis on pavement and geotechnical engineering applications. Research
experience includes statistical and probabilistic analyses to model the in-service pavement behavior,
mechanistic-empirical pavement design and material characterization. Teaching experience encompasses
several undergraduate and graduate level courses related to soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering,
engineering materials, advanced pavement analysis and design and reliability-based designs. Professional
practices involves work on soil explorations, foundation design, pavement design and analysis including
back-calculation, nondestructive pavement evaluation using the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD),
Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS) strategies, field (and laboratory) material testing,
asphalt mix design, construction supervision, geometric design, project management, transportation
planning, traffic studies, and structural analysis & design of highway bridges.
OBJECTIVES
Seeking a challenging position in academia that would utilize my extensive educational, research and

Research Projects
Currently, workings on several research projects that are funded by international, federal and local
agencies, these studies include:
1. Development of Asphalt Pavement Recycling Guidelines for Pakistan, Sponsored by National
Academies of Sciences and USAID;
2. Effective Experimental Design and Data Analysis in Transportation Research, Sponsored by National
Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP);

Worked as a researcher on following projects:
7. Effect of Michigan multi-axle trucks on pavement distress and profile, the study involves performing
cyclic testing using MTS on concrete beams to investigate effect of multiple-axles on the fatigue of
Plain Cement Concrete (PCC). Sponsored by Michigan Department of Transportation;
8. Predicting in-service performance of flexible pavements from accelerated pavement testing (APT).
Project NCHRP 10-66 Phase-I, the study involved modeling of in-service pavements by using nonlinear regression models and applying reliability-based method to evaluate the bias correction factors
between APT and field pavement performances.
9. Influence of design and construction features on the response and performance of new flexible and
rigid pavements. NCHRP 20-50 (10/16) Project on LTPP Data Analysis. The project involved
extensive data analyses from the SPS-1, SPS-2 and SPS-8 experiment designs using various statistical
methods. The most appropriate statistical methods were accepted based on the objectives and
quality/amount of available data.
Prepared Research Proposals
Written and prepared several technical research proposals for international, federal and state donor
agencies. Some of these proposals include:
1. Written a successful research proposal for NCHRP Project 20-71 “Effective Experimental Design and
Data Analysis in Transportation Research”. The overall objective of this research project is to
develop guidance for effective experiment design and data analysis for transportation research.
(Duration: 1.5 years, Funding: $250,000).
2. Written a successful research proposal for NCHRP Project 1-45 “Models for Estimating the Effects of
Pavement Condition on Vehicle Operating Costs”. The research team includes MSU, UMTRI, WSU
and UT Austin. (Duration: 3 years, Funding: $500,000).
3. Written a successful research proposal for “Development of Guidelines for Asphalt Pavement
Recycling in Pakistan”. The research is sponsored by the Pakistan-United States Science and
Technology Cooperative Program under National Academies of Sciences, Washington DC. The
research proposal was one of only 11 selected from among the 112 proposals. (Duration: 3 years,
Funding: $850,000).
4. Prepared a successful research proposal “Evaluation of 1-37 A Design Process for New and
Rehabilitated JPCP and HMA Pavements”. This study involves extensive use of the M-E PDG
software for execution of sensitivity analyses to identify the most important variables for Michigan
DOT pavement design practices. (Duration: 2.5 years, Funding: $250,000).
5. Written a successful research proposal “Pavement Subgrade MR Design Values for Michigan
Seasonal Changes”. The research involves extensive triaxial soil testing in the laboratory and FWD
non-destructive deflection testing in the field. (Duration: 2 years, Funding: $170,000)

6. Written a successful research proposal “Assessment of Pavement Acceptance Criteria and
Quantifying its As-Constructed Material and Structural Properties”. This study will review the
current state-of-the-art practices of MDOT for QC/QA process and determine the feasibility of
adopting new acceptance criteria that better relates to pavement performance. (Duration: 2 years,
Funding: $225,000)
7. Prepared and submitted a research proposal “Implementation of Superpave Binder and Asphalt Mix
Specification to Improve Pavement Performance in Pakistan”. This research will encompass the stateof-the-art asphalt materials characterization to improve asphalt mixture design specifications in
Pakistan. (Duration: 3 years, Funding: $790,500).
8. Prepared and submitted a research proposal “Assessment of Implementing Mechanistic-Empirical
Pavement Design Guide (M-E PDG) for Pavement Design in Egypt”. This study will involve
assessment of implementing M-E PDG design procedure in Egypt. (Duration: 2 years, Funding:
$60,000).

Completed the course work for a Doctorate Degree in Civil Engineering. Covered various topics in
advance pavement design and rehabilitation, statistical and probabilistic analyses, data mining,
pavement materials (especial topics on Superpave Mix Design, SHRP), reliability analyses, advanced
geotechnical design, pavement management and soil dynamics.
Worked on a NCHRP 20-50 (10/16) Project on LTPP Data Analysis Project: Influence of design and
construction features on the response and performance of new flexible and rigid pavements. The
project involved extensive data analyses from the SPS-1, SPS-2 and SPS-8 experiment designs.
Developed statistical models to investigate the relationships between pavement roughness,
performance and material properties using Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Data.
Investigated the relative damage of various axle types and truck configurations by using in-service
flexible pavement performance data (roughness, rutting and fatigue cracking).
Involved in research pertaining to the effects of various axle and truck configurations on the fatigue
cracking and joint deterioration of the rigid pavements in the state of Michigan. This research
involves laboratory testing of concrete beams subjected to various types of dynamic load pulses and
full-scale testing of concrete slabs under dynamic loads.
Worked on developing relationships between pavement response (surface deflection) and future
pavement performance. The dynamic load response (DLR) data from Ohio SHRP sections
instrumented with strain gauges, pressure cell and LVDTs were analyzed to validate the mechanistic
response from the analytical solutions (linear elastic, dynamic and FEM).

Involved in the study of non-linear material behavior of unbound layers in flexible pavements and
validation of response incorporating non-linear back-calculated layer properties with actual measured
deflections.
