Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary’s
Construction of Three Shelters for Rescued Horses
TIERRA MADRE HORSE SANCTUARY is the forever home to 34 previously abandoned,
neglected, injured or abused horses.
There are ex-racehorses, ex-show horses, ex-ranch horses, ex-rodeo horses & a number of just
plain good ol’ horses. The one thing they all now have in common is that they’re happy &
healthy.
Over the past several months, we’ve taken in nine newcomers: a young racehorse who broke her
leg on the racetrack, two ex-racehorses that could no longer race, a once-wild mustang that came
from a Native American reservation, three horses that had been abandoned, & a brother & sister
whose one-time owner’s health deteriorated to the point where she could no longer care for them.
They are now living in nice, big new corrals – but those corrals do not yet have shade/shelter
structures in them.
As we’re located in the Arizona desert, the blazing sun means summer temperatures are
constantly over 100 degrees & often reach as high as 118. Further, in the late summer, we have
our annual rainy season, where thunderstorms can drop as much as three inches in a single short
burst.
Therefore, it is imperative that we build a shade/shelter structure in each of these new corrals
before the summer comes upon us. They need to be in place no later than June 1st.
Each of the planned structures will measure 12 feet by 20 feet – large enough that all the horses in
each corral can be under cover if they wish.
Four-inch steel pipes, buried four feet into the ground with cement footings, will ensure the
stability & safety of our construction. The framing will be 3-inch heavy-duty pipe. Heavy-gauge
steel plates will make up the roofs & will be held in place with threaded sheet metal screws.
The structures we will build are designed to last for decades.
Each structure, including all materials, parts & labor will cost $2000.
Therefore, we hope to raise $6000 by early to mid-May to ensure the structures are in place on
time.
