2. Parenting with Cancer Focus Group
Do you have children 18 years of age or under? Are you concerned about the way your
cancer is affecting your family?
The Cancer Center Parenting Program (PACT) will be conducting focus groups by phone
to learn about your parenting concerns and how a parent’s cancer is affecting your family
life. Focus groups of 4-6 people each will meet on a conference call for 1 - 1½ hours to
discuss concerns about parenting with cancer. You may also be asked to offer feedback
on a questionnaire that assesses parenting concerns. For more information on this

3. Are you taking medication for bipolar disorder and experiencing sexual side
effects?
If you are a female, aged 18-80 and experiencing sexual dysfunction due to psychotropic
medications for bipolar disorder, you may be eligible to participate at no cost to you in a
12-week research study of a natural compound called Maca Root. Maca Root has been
used for centuries in South America for nutritional and medicinal purposes. This study is
designed to determine whether Maca Root is effective in the treatment of sexual
dysfunction associated with the treatment regimen for bipolar disorder.

4. Wanted: Menopausal Women with or without Hot Flashes
Dr. Seely of the Brigham and Women’s Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and
Hypertension is doing a 2-day study examining the heart and blood vessels of women
who have hot flashes and women who do not have hot flashes. This study involves
wearing a hot flash monitor, blood pressure monitor and heart rate monitor for 24 hours.
Participants will be compensated up to $200 for their time. If you are a Menopausal
Women between the Ages 46-55 with more than 4 hot flashes each day or without hot

5. Do You Have Asthma?
The Asthma Research Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is recruiting asthmatics
aged 18-50 who use asthma medication to control their symptoms. The research study
involves 12 visits over a 6-month period and involves bronchoscopies. The study’s
purpose is to assess the safety and effectiveness of a new medication in the treatment of
asthma. Compensation up to $1650 will be provided at the end of participation. Call us at

6. Comparison of Lantus and NPH Insulin in the Dawn Phenomenon
Massachusetts General Hospital, Diabetes Research Center, seeks individuals with
Type 1 diabetes for a research study to better understand how two different types of longacting insulin affect blood sugar control during the early morning hours. Study involves:
1. Three daytime outpatient visits at the Diabetes Research Center, including nutritional
counseling, teaching of Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS). 2. Two
overnight inpatient hospital stays during which blood samples will be obtained through
an intravenous (in the vein) line. Study requirements: Candidates must have Type 1
diabetes for 5 or more years, be between the ages of 18-60, and must use either glargine
(Lantus) or NPH insulin. Compensation: Up to $220. All tests and alternate insulins

7. PMS and Depression Study
Seeking women between 18-45 with PMS who have been diagnosed with depression.
If you are between 18 and 45 and:
 Suffer with PMS
 Currently being treated with an antidepressant
You may be eligible for a research study at Massachusetts General Hospital evaluating
how a birth control helps with premenstrual mood symptoms.
Women who participate will receive study medication and evaluations of their mood at
no cost, and will be compensated up to $450.

8. Healthy Volunteers Wanted for HIV Vaccine Research Study
Brigham and Women's Hospital researchers are looking for healthy men and women to
participate in HIV Research Studies.
You may be eligible to participate in one of the investigational, preventative studies
currently being conducted, if you meet the following criteria:
 HIV negative adult
 18-50 years in age
 In good health
All participants receive counseling and testing at no cost. Compensation is also provided.
FACT: You cannot get HIV from participating in an HIV Vaccine Research Study.

9. OVERWEIGHT? You may have High Blood Pressure
Men and women who are overweight are at greater risk for High Blood Pressure and
High Blood Sugar. You may qualify to take part in a clinical research study at Brigham
and Women’s Hospital. The main purpose of this study is to see if an approved blood
pressure drug can improve your blood sugar.
You may qualify IF you:
 Are between 18 and 75 years old
 Are overweight
 Do not have diabetes
 Do not take more than one medicine for high blood pressure
 Are able to attend 5-6 visits at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Qualified participants will receive (at no cost):
 Screening for high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol
 Physical examination
 Research medication
 Modest compensation and reimbursement of parking/public transportation costs

10. Women with anorexia nervosa who are 18-45 years old and have not had their
period for at least 3 months, are needed for a research study at Massachusetts General
Hospital looking at the role of cortisol and other hormones on skeletal health.
Participants cannot be on oral contraceptive pills. The study includes an hour-long
screening session, a two-hour outpatient visit and a 24-hour inpatient stay. Participants
receive a physical examination, nutritional and body composition analyses, and a
hormonal evaluation, as well as bone density, blood, urine and saliva tests at no cost. For

11. Healthy Subjects Who Have Experienced Trauma Wanted For
A Study of Brain Activity in People with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Dr. Lisa Shin and colleagues in the Department of Psychiatry at the Massachusetts
General Hospital (MGH) are conducting a research study to examine brain activity in
individuals who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as compared to those who do
not have PTSD. We are seeking healthy comparison subjects who have experienced
traumatic events in the past. Participation will take up to 5 hours of your time. It will
involve undergoing a psychiatric assessment, filling out questionnaires, providing a saliva
sample, and lying in a scanner while “pictures” of your brain are taken using functional
magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants will be paid $100 for their time.

12. Do you want to know how your pregnancy, blood sugar, and heart are related?
The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Hypertension Division of Brigham and Women’s
Hospital seeks healthy Black women 18-40 years old who have had normal pregnancies
or pregnancies complicated by diabetes in the past 5 years for a research study on
diabetes during pregnancy and its effects on heart disease risk. The research study
includes an oral glucose tolerance test, fasting blood tests and a non-invasive vascular
study. Participants cannot be currently pregnant or nursing.
Takes about 5 hours. Stipend is $100.

13. Seeking men and women diagnosed with schizophrenia:
Researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Psychiatry Department seek men
and women ages 18-65 that have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
and are treated with clozapine (clozaril). This twelve week research study examines the
effects of aripiprazole, an antipsychotic medication, on lipid and glucose metabolism, as
well as body composition when added to clozapine. We are interested in learning
whether aripiprazole improves how the body manages blood sugar and/or decreases
cholesterol and triglycerides and thereby decreases the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular
disease in subjects receiving clozapine treatment. Participants are compensated up to
