Biography Bernadette La Hengst
Bernadette La Hengst ( born1967) comes from Bad Salzuflen in Westfalia where, between
1986 and 1988 she was a part of the ‚Fast Weltweit’ label scene (with Frank Spilker/Die
Sterne & Jochen Distelmeyer/Blumfeld) and released a number of songs on their tape
cassette samplers.
1987 she relocated to Berlin and worked as an theatre actress.
1989 she moved to Hamburg and in the following year formed the bands ‚Die Braut haut ins
Auge’ and the ‚Mobylettes’ and was, from 1989 till 1991,a member of the band ‚HUAH’ Since
1992 she has repeatedly lent her voice to Rocko Schamoni (on tour and in the studio) as a
guest singer.
‚Die Braut haut ins Auge’ realeased 3 studio albums, played what are now considered to be
legendary concerts in virtually every city, town and hamlet in Germany, toured the U.S.A. in
1996 and in the summer of 1997, were invited to play at one of the largest Rock festivals in
St Petersburg/Russia.
1999 ‚Die Braut haut ins Auge’ amicably disbanded and to round up a good 9 year roll, they
recorded a live Album ‚+1 auf die Gästeliste’ (+1 on the Guest list) which Bernadette La
Hengst released on her label ‚B.H. Records’ to coincide with the band’s farewell tour.
1998 until 2001 she represented female musicians and bands with her booking agency ‚B.H.
Booking’ and played a part in supporting a female music network in Germany.
She is one of the founding members of the non-commercial group ‚Buttclub’ in Hamburg that
was created as a cultural-political network and has, since 1999, organised political activities
and readings and film and art events.
She is also one of the founding members of the street-theatre free jazz collective
‚Schwabinggrad Ballett’. Since 1999, they have been active primarily at political
demonstrations and anti-border camps. In the spring of 2005, their first album

2000 Bernadette La Hengst received a grant from the ministry of culture in Hamburg with
which she financed a 4 month working residence in Lisbon/Portugal.
2002 Bernadette La Hengst’s first solo album ‚Der beste Augenblick in deinem leben’(The
best moment in your life) was released on the ‚Trikont’ label. (www.trikont.de)
2002 & 2003 she played around 100 unforgettable concerts in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland – initially with guest musicians and then as of August 2002, completely solo.
In June 2003, Bernadette La Hengst, Margit Czenki & Christoph Schaefer organised an
international congress in Hamburg called ‚Park Fiction presents: Unlikely Encounters in
Urban Space’. www.parkfiction.org
For August 2003, she organised, together with 50 other female artists, musicians and
activists the ‚Ladyfest Hamburg’ - a four-day feminist festival that rose out of the (U.S.) Riot
Grrrl movement with music, film, art, literary readings and workshops.
In September 2003, Bernadette La Hengst was distinguished by the state of NordrheinWestfalen for her complete artistic work (to date!) with the Female Artists Award in the

In November 2003, she acted in and wrote & performed music for the play ‚Alles muss man
selber machen – Globalisierung in 20 Lektionen’ (You have to do every thing yourself – 20
lessons in globalization) Directed by Matthias Hartz and performed in the Sophiensaele
Theatre in Berlin.
In January 2004, she performed the solo piece ‚Die Liebespopulistin’ (the Love Populist) – a
collaboration with Till Mueller Klug – at the theatre festival ‚100 Grad Berlin’ in HAU/Berlin.
2 further performances in the ‚Politbuero’ in Hamburg led to their re-working of the piece into
a radio play that was broadcasted on WDR Eins Live in September 2004.
For October 2004, in collaboration with Ekkehard Ehlers, she composed the music for the
play ‚Singing.immateriell arbeiten’ (Singing. Immaterial working) that was directed by Ulrich
Rasche and performed in the Palast der Republik in Berlin.
In September 2005, Bernadette La Hengst’s second solo album ‚La Beat’ will be released.
