UDC's flexible structure, which allows very expressive indexing and searching on different aspects of a subject, has led to its widespread use in technical libraries and information services. But it is also well suited to use outside library contexts, and for organizing collections of objects and nontraditional documents. Multi-media collections can be grouped according to medium - sound recordings, video recordings, photographs, motion pictures etc. The scheme has been used to classify motion pictures by subject and map collections by place, and is equally suitable for cataloguing collections of stamps, coins, model soldiers - anything that needs indexing to exploit its interest to the full. A major private art collection has been indexed by UDC, enabling efficient retrieval of information about (for example) the history of animal breeds or of costume, from pictorial or sculptural evidence. It has been known for many years that UDC works well in computer searches for traditional forms of information, but it is also effective for organizing computer files themselves, and now in use on the World Wide Web – it is used on several websites to arrange directories of learning resources and published information. It has been translated into many languages and published in many countries, and the English editions are in worldwide use. UDC was recently estimated to have 100 000 institutional and individual languages spread over 60 countries. Now available in English are UDC editions of various sizes, a comprehensive guide to its use and an online service, annually updated with the latest revisions. There is also a 2-day course for beginners, 'Introduction to the UDC', held each summer at University College London. UDC is designed to index and retrieve highly technical information and is well suited to indexing non-traditional media. It has been used successfully for indexing multi-media collections, motion pictures, map collections, art collections and webbased directories of learning resources. It is uniquely equipped to represent interrelations between subjects. Because it is searchable by truncation, it offers the option of broadening the search if it is not immediately productive. The product has been enhanced and improved and now offers: Complete content of the internationally owned official UDC database The most update version always available online Number building facility helps you to construct complex UDC numbers and see the result developing on screen Search and view online Cut and paste functionality – save time and effort and avoid transcription errors User friendly screens Multiple search strategies e.g. string search in natural language, boolean search, searching using summaries and shifting to greater detail or browsing the notation, up or down the hierarchy Platform/compatibility: may be used on any HTML compatible platform Context sensitive help For more information and a flash demo, go to: www.udc-online.com For price information and sales enquiries, email: marketing@techindex.co.uk or call British Standards Publishing Sales Limited on +44 (0) 1344 404429 h:\grfiles\blurbs\publications 02-06.doc 2002-06 4 POCKET EDITION PD 1000:1999 Universal Decimal Classification. Pocket Edition The Universal Decimal Classification in a new compact version for training and personal use BSI's latest edition of UDC answers a long-felt need for a version that is compact, lowcost and user-friendly for beginners. Called 'The Pocket Edition' and containing about 4000 entries, it preserves the essential characteristics of UDC while eliminating material that is not essential for small-scale use. It is based on the Master Reference File, the UDC database of 65 000 entries, and includes the latest updates. Highly technical detail has been excluded, but terms likely to be sought have been retained wherever possible. This edition also contains an index and a newly compiled introduction explaining the structure of the scheme and giving practical advice on its use. It is used as a training edition in library and information studies, and copies are included in the annual 2-day beginners' course 'Introduction to the UDC' at University College London. The Pocket Edition, PD 1000, will be invaluable for learners, for staff training, for organizing electronic files and for classifying small collections. 288 pages. £16-00. ISBN 0-580-33045-1 h:\grfiles\blurbs\publications 02-06.doc 2002-06 5 GUIDE The Universal Decimal Classification – a guide to its use by I C McIlwaine A new publication from the UDC Consortium, also available from BSI This book is an extension and total revision of Ia McIlwaine's earlier Guide to the use of UDC. The original was written in 1993 and during the intervening years much has happened with the classification. In particular, a much more rigorous approach has been undertaken in revision to ensure that the scheme is able to handle the requirements of a networked world. The Guide outlines the history and development of the Universal Decimal Classification, provides practical hints on its application and works through all the auxiliary and main tables highlighting aspects that need to be noted in applying the scheme. It also provides guidance on the use of the Master Reference File and discusses the ways in which the classification is used in the 21st century and its suitability as an aid to subject description in tagging metadata and consequently for application on the Internet. It is intended as a source for information about the scheme, for practical usage by classifiers in their daily work and as a guide to the student learning how to apply the classification. It is amply provided with examples to illustrate the many ways in which the scheme can be applied and will be a useful source for a wide range of information workers.
