This collection of 104 photographs includes images of several Spanish cities. Although the city
of Toledo is particularly well illustrated, the collection includes images of other locations, such
as Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Burgos, Valencia and Murcia. These views pay attention to
general cityscapes but also to particular places in the city, monuments, and public and private
buildings. There are samples of architectural details. A few landscapes are also to be found in
this collection. These views illustrate Spain from the Roman period to the nineteenth century.
Furthermore, the collection includes several portraits, most of them of unidentified individuals.
Particularly interesting is the small group of portraits of toreadors. The group of reproductions of
works of art includes paintings by the great masters, such as Velázquez, and a few prizewinning paintings of the 1878 and the 1881 Fine Arts Exhibitions. There is a photograph of
Venice attributed to J. Laurent [?].

This collection, purchased by the State in 1975, includes more than 40,000 negatives. Most of
these negatives are glass plates. 11,000 negatives can be attributed to the studio of Jean
Laurent. However, the rest should be attributed to consecutive owners of the studio, particularly
to J. Lacoste, active between 1900 and 1916. The collection consists of 9,500 collodion plates
as well as some dry-plate duplicates. Although most of these plates measure between 260 x
350 mm and 270 x 360 mm, this collection includes nearly 1,000 stereo negatives, 15
panoramic negatives (270 x 600 mm), and a few other formats: 300 x 400 mm, 400 x 500 mm,
180 x 240mm and 270 x 600 mm. More than 1,300 albumen prints and an album including more
than 200 carte de visite portraits are also housed at the Ministry of Education, Culture and
Sports. The collection also includes other minor items.
