January we are holding the second of our Classic Am Promenade Concerts.
Those of you who attended our October concert will, we are sure, agree that it was a very enjoyable event, with superb musicians and excellent acoustics in the main hall.
This time we welcome another group of young musicians trained at Birmingham Conservatoire, Trio Capriccio. As you will see from the accompanying programme notes, they will be playing a very varied selection with something for everyone.
Our aim is to present a quality classical performance in an informal atmosphere. Children and families are especially welcome. Ticket prices for children and students are £5, Adults £10, Concessions £8.

Devienne Trio in Bb, Op. 61, N0. 5

(1759-1803) i) Allegro ii) Rondo Allegro
A celebrated bassoonist and flutist, François Devienne is remembered now for the several concertos he wrote for his own performance, although he also wrote a dozen operas and many chamber works. The trio performed today is interesting in its two fast movement structure.
Arrieu Suite en Trio
(1903-1990) i) Allegro non troppo
Claude Arrieu was a female French composer, who studied at the Paris
Conservatoire. She won the first prize for composition in 1932. Her music is ii) Allegro Scherzando iii) Allegro Giusto identified by its easy flow and has elegance of structure that typified
Parisian neo-classicism. The vivacity, clarity of expression and natural feel for melody contained within these movements is indicative of her work.

Judith Bailey is a contemporary British composer who has published extensively in various forms. As well as Wind Willows her compositions iii) The River Bank iv) Wayfarers All include two Symphonies, two String Quartets, a Clarinet Concerto and many other orchestral, chamber and instrumental pieces. Inspired by quotes from the famous Kenneth Grahame novel, these delightful movements will transport you to the world of Mole, Ratty, Badger & Toad!
Beethoven Variations on the theme
“La ci darem la mano”
This set was so popular that Beethoven arranged it for instrumental combinations including the one you will hear today. Based on a theme from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, each variation is unique in style and

This 5 movement Divertimento in Bb is one of a set of 5 that were originally
(1756-1791) i) Allegro ii) Menuetto iii) Adagio iv)Menuetto, written for 3 Basset horns. The date of these compositions is thought to be around 1783 during Mozart’s time in Vienna. The trios were unknown until 1800 when Mozart’s widow wrote to a publisher to inform them that clarinettist Anton
Stadler had the works in his possession; they were then first published in 1803.

One of the most famous Soviet composers, Shostakovich had a complex and difficult relationship with the Soviet government. Despite the official controversy, his works were popular and well received. These are arrangements of two of his Preludes for piano, compositions which were inspired by his huge admiration for J S Bach.
Born in Madgebur, Germany, Telemann was a self taught musician capable of playing many instruments including the flute, violin, viola da gamba, oboe, trombone, double bass, and several keyboard instruments! Telemann was a
Handel and prolific in his output producing hundreds of works over his lifetime.

George and Ira Gershwin were one of the most famous composing partnerships of the twentieth century, with much of their music finding success on the
Broadway stage. These instantly recognizable melodies are taken from some of their most popular works and have been arranged for trio by Dennis Armitage.
Gordon Lewin was a British musician who studied clarinet and composition at the
Royal Manchester College of Music. He worked in London theatres as an arranger and was a member of the BBC TV Orchestra. From 1964 he freelanced on clarinet and saxophone with most of the major orchestras for recordings, radio and television, and has performed on sound-tracks of over 100 films.
