Guidance Notes on completing the
Supplementary Round Proposal Form 2012
Background to Supplementary Round
During the Selection Panel it was decided that we would use a proportion of the remaining funds
to finance either a CASE studentship or a studentship to be jointly supervised by two of the
partner institutions. This has taken the form of a competition, requiring proposals to be
submitted to the SEDTC either detailing a collaborative agreement with a non-academic partner
(e.g. CASE) or detailing joint supervision arrangements between two partner institutions. The
DTC will then decide to fund at least one of the potential projects. This studentship will then be
advertised.
General Notes on completing the form
Question 1 - Institution
Please indicate which institution is submitting the proposal. In the case of a joint supervision
proposal please include both institutions, indicating which one would take on the primary
supervision and financial role.
Question 2 - Pathway
Please indicate in which one of the following Pathways the proposed research would fall:
Economics (Kent; Reading; Royal Holloway; Surrey)
Human Geography (Reading; Royal Holloway)
Management and Business Studies (Kent; Reading; Royal Holloway; Surrey)
Political Science and International Studies (Kent; Reading; Royal Holloway)
Psychology (Kent; Reading; Royal Holloway; Surrey)
Social Anthropology (Kent)
Social Work and Social Policy (Kent)
Socio-Legal Studies (Reading; Kent)
Sociology (Kent; Royal Holloway; Surrey)
Environment, Energy and Resilience (Kent; Reading; Royal Holloway; Surrey)
Question 3 – Contact details
Please provide contact details for the individual submitting the proposal. This will be the person
contacted by the SEDTC if the proposal is successful.
Question 4 - Proposed research project.
Please give the title of the proposed research project.
Proposed Research
The proposed research should include background to the topic, literature review and methods to
be used (including any facilities needed and periods of overseas fieldwork envisaged).
Fit to SEDTC aims and Pathway
Please provide details of how the proposed research fits well with both the overall aims of the
SEDTC, as well as demonstrating that the proposed research provides a good fit within one of the
SEDTC pathways.
Reasons to Fund Proposal
This will be used as a tie breaker in the event that there are two equally ranked proposals once
all other criteria are taken into account. This section should consist of no more than three points
(these should be kept very brief).
Existing Student
Please indicate whether you have a suitable student in mind for the proposed research project. It
is not a requirement to have a student lined up for the project, but if you do have a student in
mind you will need to complete the relevant part of the section covering supervision
arrangements.
Question 5 – Supervisor details
Please give the details of the supervisory team. All DTC supervision must involve at least 2
supervisors. If applying for a CASE studentship or working in collaboration with industrial or nonHigher Education partners then students should give details of a supervisor from the collaborative
partner.
2nd Supervisor
In the event that a supervisory team is involved multiple names can be entered here. However, in
the case of joint supervision this should contain a single named individual.
Joint Supervision Arrangements
If the proposal is for a joint supervision project you will be required to complete this section,
outlining the arrangements in place to manage this. For example you may wish to detail whether
the student or supervisor will travel for meetings, how time may be divided between the two
institutions and the specifics of what this particular joint supervision offers the student.
Question 6 – CASE or other Collaborative Awards
CASE and other Collaborative Awards are designed for research students to carry out projects
within the Social Sciences in collaboration with companies/business/policy organisations etc.
They provide PhD students with the opportunity to gain experience of work outside an academic
environment. An academic supervisor and a company supervisor support students. The partner
organisation makes a financial contribution as cash or “in kind” to the DTC and / or student.
This section must be completed if your project has been submitted as a CASE / collaborative
proposal.
Selection Criteria
The criteria used for selection will be based upon:
1. Evidence of the quality of the proposal (60%)
2. Fit to SEDTC aims and pathway (40%) – successful proposals will demonstrate how they
draw on areas of particular strength within the institution and pathway
Please note that in the event of equally ranked applications on the main criteria a proposal with
a CASE / collaboration element will be preferred.
Submission and Next Steps
The deadline for submitting proposals to the SEDTC is 12 midday on 31st May 2012.
Proposals should be submitted by email to Charlotte Ayling at c.ayling@surrey.ac.uk
Decisions on proposals will be communicated by email to the contact provided by 22nd June 2012.
The successful proposal will need to secure a suitable student by the end of July 2012
(confirmation of this to be provided to the DTC by 1st August, with full details of the student to
be provided to the SEDTC by 17th August 2012 at the latest).
