Traineeship Purpose Our 9-month internship in oncology provides an opportunity for recently-qualified veterinary surgeons with an interest in oncology to receive high-quality postgraduate training in small animal oncology under the supervision of experienced clinicians in the R(D)SVS Hospital for Small Animals. The emphasis of the programme is on gaining practical clinical experience in small animal oncology. This provides the intern with an opportunity to participate in a specialist veterinary discipline and can allow preparation for further postgraduate qualifications (eg Senior Clinical Training Scholarship programme (residency) in Oncology) The Internship programme covers: Case management of individual animals referred for oncology workup, the level of responsibility increasing as the intern demonstrates ability and knowledge. Involvement in busy and expanding oncology service. Experience in teaching and communication. Basic tuition in research methods and scientific writing. Opportunity to design and undertake research project. Duties Oncology Intern will work in the Hospital for Small Animals (HfSA). The Hospital is a busy multidisciplinary referral and teaching hospital, seeing over 16,000 appointments per year, and has an annual turnover of over £4.5m. In addition the Hospital hosts a first opinion dog and cat practice and an exotic animals practice. Interns will participate in clinical oncology activities with referred cases in the Hospital for Small Animals. This includes diagnostic procedures, medical management and interventional procedures. 1 Interns will be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, with an interest in developing clinical experience and acumen in a supportive environment, alongside residents and specialist clinic staff. HfSA is an approved centre for all ECVIM medical disciplines (cardiology, internal medicine and oncology) in addition to Anaesthesia, Pathology and Diagnostic Imaging, training residents to Diploma level. The appointee will be responsible to the Hospital Director of the HfSA. Eligibility 1. Individuals have a veterinary degree 2. Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons 3. Right to Work in the UK 4. English language skills Working Pattern and Duration You will be expected to work in line with normal hospital opening hours (08:30-17:30). The Hospital is very busy and participation in overtime will be expected. The total hours that you are required to work will be in compliance with the Working Time Directive regulations. Where you work beyond 5.30pm Monday to Friday, you may claim an out of hours hourly rate of £9.90. Any overtime that you work will be paid in line with the local Out of Hours policy (applicable to all clinicians). Problem Solving Interns will not normally be expected to resolve problems other than those presented to them within a controlled environment to provide appropriate learning opportunities. 6.
