1. Discuss any instructional leadership positions that you have assumed including team leadership,
presentations at staff development and professional conferences, committee work, etc.

The year four content focus is American Diversity and Identity. Provide examples of specific
topics and themes that you would like to see addressed during the course of the academic year.
3.
Discuss your plan for the development of specific curriculum materials related to the teaching of
traditional American history. Identify the focus or theme of your curriculum project and how the
project will be shared with other educators.
4. If you participated in previous Teaching American History cohorts, please discuss your
contributions to the goals of the program (i.e. number of lesson plans submitted,
lesson/conference presentations you have delivered, etc.) and how this program impacted your
knowledge and pedagogy of traditional American history.

Teacher historians will be notified by February 1, 2013 of their selection.

Teacher historian guidelines and agreement
Benefits to teacher historians
Teacher historians will receive the following benefits as participants of the Teaching American History grant program:
 Up to $1,140 in extra duty pay for participation in grant activities
 $300 in extra duty pay for the submission, revision and re-submission of one original lesson dealing with traditional
American history
 7-day professional development seminar at Rice University, all expenses paid
 5-day in-depth field study in New York City, most expenses paid
 One content workshop during the academic year, all expenses paid
 $575 worth of curriculum resources per person which will be distributed at the various seminars and workshops
throughout the grant year
 Up to 57 hours of professional development credits
Expectations of teacher historians


Must be currently teaching 5thgrade Social Studies, 8th grade Social Studies, or high school U.S. History and
scheduled to teach a U.S. History-based course in 2013-2014.
Teacher historians will commit to attend and actively participate in the following mandatory grant activities:
o March 26, 2013 – Orientation Seminar @ FBISD, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
o March 28, 2013 –Distinguished speaker, H.W. Brands @ Rice University, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
o June 10-18, 2013 – Summer Seminar @ Rice University, 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
o June 20-June 24, 2013 – Field Study: New York City, Modern America and the Global Community

Teacher historians, during the course of the spring and early summer of 2013, will research and develop one original
lesson dealing with traditional American history. Teachers will be given guidelines as to the structure and content of
their lessons.
o April, 2013 – Lesson plan topics due to district personnel
o May, 2013 – Rough draft of lesson 1 due
o May/June, 2013 – Lesson 1 feedback returned to teachers
o June, 2013 – Final draft of lesson 1 due
o Summer 2013 – Curriculum will be uploaded to digital curriculum library on grant Web site

Teacher historians will be expected to share their knowledge gained and curriculum products at a minimum of one
professional event over the project year or subsequent academic year. Presentations can be done at the local, state
or national level, and may be done in collaboration with other participants.
o June 2013 - May 2014 – Cohort 4 curriculum dissemination and professional presentations

Teacher historians will participate in all grant evaluation activities.
I have read and understand the expectations of a teacher historian. I agree to comply with all teacher historian
expectations and responsibilities, and I am prepared to commit to the grant program from March 2013 – June 2013.
Furthermore, I understand that failure to fulfill all grant obligations will result in a reduction of personal grant benefits to
include extra duty pay, resources, etc.
