MATH 103 LECTURE 207 – ONLINE
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS OF MATHEMATICS

Tom O’Bryan, Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Associate Dean in the

PREREQUISITE:
Either a grade of C or better in UWM Math 094 or 095 (or its equivalent on transfer) or a
UWM math placement score of at least 20. This prerequisite is enforced without
exception by the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
TEXTBOOK AND CALCULATOR REQUIREMENT:
There is no textbook required for this section of Math 103. All the material is available
on the course d2l web site. You will need a calculator able to compute Combinations –
ordinarily a calculator with an “nCr” button or capability.

GRADING POLICIES:
The course grade is based entirely on the FINAL TEST score. The FINAL TEST is an
open-note, calculator allowed cumulative test that may be attempted twice. The tables
below give the course grade that will be awarded based on the highest FINAL TEST
score achieved by the 12/22/11 deadline:

For those who have not scored at least 5 on QUIZ 789 prior to first attempting the FINAL
TEST - Course grade is F regardless of FINAL TEST score.
-------------------------------------------------------------------A grade of C (not C-) or better is required to satisfy UWM’s GER Mathematics
Proficiency requirement.
There is no extra credit or make-up work available to improve the course grade.
A grade of Incomplete can only be given to a student who has carried the course
successfully until near the end of the semester but, because of illness or other unusual and
substantiated cause beyond that student's control, has been unable to take or complete the
final test or to complete some limited amount of term work.

FINAL TEST INFORMATION:
The FINAL TEST is a 60 minute timed paper test administered in person and cannot be
taken until you score at least 5 on QUIZ 789. Scoring at least 5 on QUIZ 1011 before
first attempting the FINAL TEST allows for the potential of a course grade higher than C
as detailed above in grading policies. Not scoring at least 5 on QUIZ 789 by 3:30pm on
12/22/11 results in a course grade of F.
The FINAL TEST will have the same format as the quizzes and have similar questions to
those on the quizzes. There is a PRACTICE FINAL TEST that will appear on Friday
12/09/11 (or earlier upon completion of QUIZ 1011 if applicable) and can be practiced 10
times.
The FINAL TEST may be taken a maximum of two times but each attempt must be at
least 6 hours apart and all attempts must be completed between Monday, December 19,
2011 and Thursday, December 22, 2011.
For those who score at least 5 on QUIZ 1011, the FINAL TEST can optionally be
scheduled at any mutually agreeable time prior to 12/17/11.
If you are in the Milwaukee area, you may take the FINAL TEST in a UWM classroom
TBA at either 8:00am-9:00am on T 12/20, R 12/22 or 3:30pm-4:30pm on M 12/19, W
12/21, R 12/22. If these times do not work for you or if you are not in the Milwaukee
area, you can arrange for a college instructor or a librarian elsewhere to proctor your
FINAL TEST. I would need to approve of such an arrangement and have the name,
email, mailing address, and phone contact of that person. Most Public Libraries offer a
proctoring service, although a few charge a nominal fee. Be sure to get a specific contact
name rather than just the name of the library. Proctoring arrangements require at least a
10 working day notice. More information about the FINAL TEST is available in the
CONTENT section of the course d2l site.
For the FINAL TEST, you must present a picture ID to verify your identity and you may
not use any device which can connect to the internet or which can communicate with
another person.
QUALIFYING FOR THE FINAL TEST: QUIZZES 123, 456, 789, 1011:
QUIZZES 123, 456, 789, and 1011 do not per se figure in to your course grade. They
qualify you to take the FINAL TEST which alone determines the course grade. These
four 6-point quizzes (QUIZ 123, QUIZ 456, QUIZ 789, and QUIZ 1011) are open-notes
with calculators allowed. It is necessary to complete QUIZ 789 with a score of 5 or 6 to
qualify to take the FINAL TEST. Successfully completing QUIZ 789 without also
successfully completing QUIZ 1011 allows a maximum course grade of C and requires
the FINAL TEST to be completed between 12/19/11 and 12/22/11.
Each of QUIZ 123, QUIZ 456, QUIZ 789, and QUIZ 1011 is a timed quiz administered
on d2l. Each QUIZ may be taken multiple times with only the highest score counting as
the QUIZ grade. Your corrected QUIZ is available to you immediately after taking it. If
you got anything wrong, re-study that material before the next attempt. You need to
score at least 5 on each QUIZ before being permitted to continue with the next unit.
Each QUIZ may be taken up to 10 times until successfully completed by achieving a
score of 5 or 6. If you have not successfully completed a QUIZ by the 10th attempt, you
need to contact me for additional attempts. It should not happen that you use all 10
attempts. After 4-5 unsuccessful attempts, you need to get assistance.
It is important that you follow exactly the quiz directions in how you express your
answers because the d2l system can only recognize answers in a particular form. In order
to get your quiz graded correctly, please follow the instructions to the letter. I expect all
quiz solutions to be submitted via the ‘QUIZZES’ area on d2l for online grading. IT IS
MY EXPECTATION THAT YOU RECEIVE NO ASSISTANCE WITH QUIZZES.
Each QUIZ has a 40 minute time limit with a 1 minute grace period after the time limit is
reached. Here is what d2l says about the time limit functionality: "After the time limit
has been exceeded, the student cannot answer any additional questions. However, the
student **must** submit the QUIZ anyway, just as usual, to get it to recognize the
questions answered prior to the time limit. Note that a student *must* save answers as
s/he goes along, because any answers not saved up to the point of the time limit cannot be
saved after it has been exceeded!"
COURSE MANAGEMENT:
This course is designed as a self-paced mastery based course. The second paragraph
below addresses the mastery based nature of the course. The first paragraph below
addresses the self-paced nature of the course. Pretty much the only reason for not being
successful in this course is simply not working through the material in a consistent and
timely manner – primarily on your own. I see too many students who just keep putting
this course off and then try to cram everything in at the end. While some are successful
with this strategy, most are not. I also see a few students who depend too heavily on a
friend or tutor
Life throws a lot of obstacles at us – illness, family emergencies, computer crashes, etc.
To protect against these obstacles, you should work well ahead in the course. In fact, you
can completely finish the course well before the end of the semester if you choose. You
will need to exercise a lot of self-discipline and practice good time management skills
to be successful in this course. I recommended a timetable above as a time model you
might choose to follow. This model assumes 1 week for each module, 1 week for
multiple attempts of the QUIZ associated with each set of modules, and time for
preparing for and taking the FINAL TEST. I advise you to work ahead of this schedule
to compensate for times when you are sick or more occupied with assignments in your
other courses.
The lecture notes in each module are presented in parts with each part followed by a
mini-quiz. The mini-quiz is an un-timed quiz of 1-3 questions. Your corrected mini-
quiz is available to you immediately after taking it. If you got anything wrong, re-study
that material before the next attempt. The mini-quiz may be taken up to 10 times until
successfully completed by achieving correct answers to all items. If you have not
successfully completed a mini-quiz by the 10th attempt, you need to contact me for
additional attempts. It should not happen that you use all 10 attempts. After 4-5
unsuccessful attempts, you need to get assistance.
Each subsequent mini-quiz will not appear until the previous one is successfully
completed. The intent of the mini-quiz is to check your understanding of the material
and to prepare you for the four timed QUIZZES in the course. Since the QUIZZES are
timed, you should strive for both accuracy and quickness with the un-timed miniquizzes. The mini-quiz score does not count toward the final course grade. However,
ALL mini-quizzes in a unit must be successfully completed by achieving correct answers
to ALL items before the unit QUIZ can be accessed.
It is important that you follow exactly the mini-quiz directions in how you express your
answers because the d2l system can only recognize answers in a particular form. In order
to get your mini-quiz graded correctly, please follow the instructions to the letter.

Email me or call me with questions. In asking questions about specific problems, I
expect you to tell me how you worked the problem so that I can point out where you
went wrong. It is not acceptable to just say “please show me how to work this problem”.
