THEATRE 650:
SEMINAR IN MUSICAL THEATRE
DANCE HISTORY
Theatre 650 is an examination of American musical-theatre dance. Through observation,
discussion, research, and analysis, students explore dance and choreography as they have evolved
throughout the course of the American musical theatre. In addition, practical application of the
dance styles and movement vocabularies and choreography observed and discussed in Theatre 650
will be analyzed, demonstrated, and taught in Theatre 555, Movement for the Theatre II. The goals
of this course are:
1. To examine the growth and evolution of theatre dance from Colonial America to today,
analyzing, European and African influences, and their evolution toward synthesis.
2. To identify various movement idioms used in theatre dance, including ballet, jazz, modern,
tap, folk, ethnic, and ballroom dance.
3. To study and be able to discuss Broadway's pioneer dance directors and their intermediate
role in the evolution of the director-choreographer in the American musical theatre.
4. To research and be able to recognize and discuss the major dancers and choreographers of
the American musical theatre, including their careers, lineage, and influence.
5. To study the origins and development of the director-choreographer from George Balanchine to Michael Bennett and beyond, and the contributions of these artists to the
development of the American musical theatre.
6. To identify and recognize the parallels between the development of dance in America and
the evolution of the American musical theatre.
7. To develop an understanding and appreciation of musical-theatre dance and the ability to
discuss it with insight and specificity.
8. In conjunction with Theatre 555, to practice and be able to identify and demonstrate
various theatre dance styles and iconic musical-theatre choreography, including the dance
vocabularies of the major choreographers of American musical theatre.
9. To facilitate more meaningful, creative, mutually supportive collaboration between directors and choreographers.
