CONCURSO CICERO CICERO COMPETITION
‫ مسـابقـة سيسـرون‬CONCOURS CICERO
CONCORSO CICERO CICERO TAKMIČENJE
The UK arm of the CICERO Competition 2014 was hosted at 6 centres on Saturday 22nd March, facilitating the
participation of students from some 18 different schools across the UK. CICERO was also hosted in Australia, Spain,
France, Italy, Serbia, Turkey and for the first time also in South Korea and the USA.
CICERO is a national Latin translation competition and international classical culture competition for Sixth Form
students. The theme of this year’s competition was Orpheus.
CICERO UK would like to thank the Gilbert Murray Trust, ARLT, the Classics Faculty Cambridge, the Society for the
Promotion of Roman Studies, the Classical Association and the Classical Association of Scotland for their generous
sponsorship of prizes and for their continued support.
Students participated in either or both the Cultural Competition and the Latin translation Competition at Wellington
College, North London Collegiate School, Liverpool Blue Coat School, Bristol Grammar School, King Edward VI High
School for Girls, Birmingham and George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh. In addition to the formal elements of the day,
host centres provided various other opportunities for participants including guest speakers and the chance to meet
and communicate with other students who share their interest in the classical world.
George Heriot’s School in Edinburgh hosted CICERO for the fourth consecutive year and welcomed thirty one
participants from six schools in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh! Their special guest Dr Costas Panayotakis gave a
thrilling talk on Roman comedy and influence it had on both Latin and English literature. Dr Panayotakis’ lively style
held the participants spellbound with some audience participation and plenty of humour. At the end of the day,
some participants managed to take part in a Skype session with others in the UK competition to secure the links that
CICERO provides not only with schools at one centre but with the national, European and worldwide goodwill that
coheres the Competition.
North London Collegiate School welcomed Dr Peter Agocs from University College, London, who gave a talk on the
portrayal of the Orpheus myth in literature and in art. Participants at NLCS were able to communicate via Skype with
participants at their sister school in Jeju, South Korea as well as with students at other UK centres. At King Edward VI
High School for Girls in Birmingham Dr Zahra Newby from Warwick University spoke on representations of Greek
mythology in Roman art. Here participants watched a video produced by Spanish participants welcoming them to
this year’s Competition and they chatted enthusiastically with fellow entrants overseas and in Scotland and Bristol.
Sarah Hearn, Head of Classics at Prior Park, gave a very entertaining and interesting talk on witches in classical
literature to participants at Bristol Grammar School, where the Competition was held in the Great Hall. The school
song Carmen Bristoliense was sung and much cake was eaten, including a special cake made for the occasion by a
parent of an Upper Sixth student. The south west contingent was able to speak with participants in such exciting
locations as South Korea, Italy … and Birmingham!
Above: CICERO participants at George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh, looking remarkably cheerful (having just
voluntarily relinquished a Saturday to do a very tough cultural competition and to translate some tricky Quintilian!)
