RESEARCH DAY SCHEDULE for March 17 and 18, 2008.
Harless Auditorium – Marshall Medical Center
Disclosure: No Disclosures or Conflicts of interest are indicted for activity planners or speakers for this
CME activity.
Research Day Opening Lecture Guest Speaker:
Gregory Alan Hale, M.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics
University of Tennessee
Memphis, Tennessee
Monday, March 17, 2008, 6PM – Harless Auditorium, Medical Center
“Transplantation and Cellular Therapies: Current Research and Future
Opportunities
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize hematopoietic cell donor choices for patients requiring transplantation.
2. Name novel indications for hematopoietic cellular therapies currently being investigated.
3. Discuss characteristics that facilitate or impede clinical research in hematopoietic cell
transplantation.
4. Describe cell populations currently being used in practice and clinical trials of hematopoietic
cell transplantation.
Lecture Content:
This lecture will provide an overview of the current state of hematopoietic cell
transplantation and therapies, describing outcomes for unrelated donor and
mismatched donor transplantation. Specific cellular therapies such as
mesenchymal cells, T-lymphocytes, and natural killer cells will be reviews with
respect to improvements in transplant recipient outcomes. Novel disease treated
by hematopoietic cellular therapies such as ischemic heart disease, limb
ischemia, autoimmune diseases will be reviewed. Finally, the current state of
clinical research and outcomes analysis will be reviewed. This talk will be an
overview of novel therapies and future opportunities in the field of hematopoietic
cellular therapies.
Tuesday, March 18, 2008, 12:30PM, Harless Auditorium
“An introduction to Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation”
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize common indications for treatment with hematopoietic cell
transplantation.
2. Define the process for hematopoietic stem cell collection, patient and donor
evaluation, and recipient transplantation.
3. Compare and contrast the available hematopoietice stem cell sources.
Lecture Content:
This lecture will define autologous and allogeneic transplantation, review the clinical
indications and volumes for each, list the sources of hematopoietic stem scells available,
describe the transplant process, report patient outcomes for certain transplant types and
diagnoses, and identify future opportunities for improvements in these outcomes. This
lecture will be an introductory talk, directed at those providing direct patient care,
covering an educational level from medical students to attending physicians.
March 18, 2008
Learning Objectives: By the end of these lectures the participant will be able to:
1. Compare different approaches to medical investigation.
2. Compare and contrast the importance of basic research and cellular mechanisms as it
relates to human disease.
3. Discuss and review research related to current and future improvements in the clinical
management of patients.
4. Interpret and analyze data for medical investigation to potentially determine the
effectiveness towards improving patient care.
