PRINCIPAL EFFECTIVENESS
Please mark your calendars for July 27, 2015. We have invited Robert Holbrook
from PDE to share with us on the status of Principal SLOs as well as any advice
he has in creating them for this coming school year. This will be the second
collaborative effort with IUs 6, 8, 10, and 11. The first one, which focused on
PBAs, was a HUGE success for those who chose to attend. If you have
questions about Principal Effectiveness SLOs, please plan on attending either
face to face or virtually through videoconferencing. More details for the July 27th
event will follow.
COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING
Registration is Open for Phase 2 Summer Training
Phase 2 training for Comprehensive Planning is right around the corner. The PA
Planning Team will be traveling to each of the IUs in the Commonwealth between
June and August. Visit this link to register for the session nearest you:
http://tinyurl.com/CPPhase2
What you can expect during training:
-Sign in will begin at 8:30 a.m. with training starting at 9:00 a.m. We will break for
lunch, which will be on your own. The afternoon will be reserved for planning
teams to work together and have the opportunity to ask additional questions and
receive further assistance from the trainers.
-Please bring your laptop to the session as all “handouts” will be electronically
dispersed.
-Please create a Portal Account if you do not have one:
https://www.login.state.pa.us/login/Register.aspx
-We will be using the CP training site to explain the process
(http://training.paplanning.org). However, if you want to access the web
application through your district’s account, you must be granted access by your
district’s “Comp Plan – Local Administrator.” This is done by your business office.
-Stay tuned for more details regarding Phase 2.
PDE SAFE SCHOOLS SERVICES
Dear Superintendents:
PDE and PEMA received a grant to provide services related to safe schools.
These services, provided at no cost, include classroom training, direct
consultation in plan development and updates, assistance with developing and
conducting exercises, and general emergency preparedness program support.
The funds provided under the grant are fixed in both amount and duration;
therefore, PDE is encouraging ALL eligible schools within the commonwealth to
schedule a course and or/ request direct consultation as early as possible.
In addition to the items listed below*, they are offering the G364 Multi-Hazard
Emergency Planning for Schools course. The two day class provides schools
with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to refine or develop an all-hazards
school emergency operations plan and to train and exercise the School EOP.
There is also a three-day option that includes tabletop exercises and how to
develop and conduct basic exercises and drills. Finally, there is an option to do a
train the trainer module, if you have individuals who would like to be able to train
others.
If you would like to schedule training, please contact Linda Russo at
lrusso@tiu11.org. The only weeks that won't work for PDE are the week of June
14th and July 13 and 20th.
Here a summary of the program:
Goals of the Grant:
 PDE will provide all PA school entities with evidence-based planning tools
and technical assistance in order to create and maintain high quality
school EOPs
 PDE will provide a software program so that EOPs developed can be
online and accessible to both the local EMA and school entity’s
designated first responders
 PDE will utilize consultants through a train-the-trainer model for use of
technology tools and to consult on the construction, refinement, and
implementation of high quality school EOPs
 PDE will provide a technical assistance to all school entities practicing
their EOPS—with both table top exercises and real-time simulations—by
making additional resources available as necessary

she will do her best to get them answered.
EARLY LEARNING GPS
Research shows that children who have access to high quality early education
experiences with families engaged in their early development are more likely to
be prepared for and succeed in kindergarten. Families always want what’s best
for their young children, but may not know where to start.
The new Early Learning GPS, www.earlylearninggps.com, is a great tool for all
families who want to learn what they need to know and can do to help their
young child learn and grow. This a great resource for teachers and schools to
share with families who have children in pre-kindergarten and the elementary
grades. Because the Early Learning GPS is online, schools can post the logo
and link to their websites and internet portals.
The Early Learning GPS helps families get reliable answers to questions like
“how do I know if my child will be ready for kindergarten?”
After a family answers a question, they receive a simple video tip and links to
reliable resources. Families can save their favorite tips and resources to their
child’s map as well as:
•
•
Follow their child’s milestones;
Find fun family activities based on Pennsylvania’s Early Learning
Standards; and
•
Compare child care/early learning programs.
The child’s map will grow with him until kindergarten!
All of the information is from reliable sources like Pennsylvania’s Office of Child
Development and Early Learning.
Visit www.earlylearninggps.com to get started. Professionals can access tips,
ways to share the GPS with families, and professional development at
www.papromiseforchildren.com/gps.
Schools may also order free Early Learning GPS promotional kits with
bookmarks, table tents and posters that they can display in school offices and
classrooms and include with other parent communications at
http://www.childcorepublishing.com/index.php/pa-only-materials.html.
The Early Learning GPS is developed by Pennsylvania’s Promise for Children in
partnership with Pennsylvania’s Office of Child Development and Early Learning
with funding from Pennsylvania’s Race to the Top – Early Learning Challenge
Grant. For more information, visit www.papromiseforchildren.com.
TIU PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

CRA Math- Addition and Subtraction
8:30-4:00
President’s Room, TIU McVeytown Office
Trainer- Tim Miller
Description: This professional development opportunity will
support teachers’ learning and implementation of the ConcreteRepresentational-Abstract (CRA) sequence of instruction, a
research-based instructional practice, for the topics of addition
and subtraction. Teachers will experience CRA as both a
teacher and a learner.
Teaching through a concrete-representational-abstract (CRA)
sequence of instruction supports students’ learning and
understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures. The
CRA sequencing of instruction is evidenced to be an effective
instructional practice (Gersten et al, 2009; NMP, 2008;
Riccomini & Witzel, 2010; Witzel 2005). Structuring consistent
models and language across the representations is a key part
of the planning and implementation process. The PaTTAN
Mathematics Initiative has created structures that will increase
teachers’ ability to immediately implement the concreterepresentational-abstract sequence of instruction as a method
of making more mathematics accessible to more students.
