MRC fellowships enable outstanding individuals to undertake challenging projects in
excellent research and training environments. An MRC award is there to enable you
to do something truly out of the ordinary in training and developing you as a
potential research leader.

Clinical Research Training Fellowships Round 2
The MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship is a pre-doctoral/entry-level clinical
fellowship providing up to three years support for active professionals to undertake
specialised or further research training in the biomedical sciences (up to four years
for patient-orientated research). Fellows are required to register for a research
degree, normally a PhD, based on the research undertaken during the fellowship.
Individuals who obtained their PhD some time in the past and now wish to pursue
further research training in the biomedical sciences are also eligible to apply for this
award.
The MRC also provides additional research support opportunities via jointly funded
pre-doctoral/entry level clinical fellowships in partnership with a number of Royal
Colleges and other organisations. These awards are intended to encourage clinicians
to become involved in research and to promote research of relevance to each
organisation. Applicants for any of the jointly funded fellowships should be aware
that each scheme may carry additional eligibility criteria; further details are on the
MRC website.
Who can apply?
Medical or dental graduates should be in the Specialty Training grade, or be at the
equivalent level in General Practice. Applicants are normally expected to have
completed all or part of their membership examinations depending on career track
by the time of take up. Experienced Specialty Training Grade applicants are usually
expected to have worked for a period in a department where clinical research is in
progress. Applications are encouraged from nurses, midwives, dentists, veterinarians
who wish to investigate human health, and members of the allied health professions
who have completed their professional training and hold a Masters Degree, or
equivalent postgraduate research-oriented qualification.
All applicants should note that residence eligibility criteria apply to this scheme and
applicants would normally be required to demonstrate a relevant connection to the
UK (or EEA) and to be employed in the UK at the time of application.

What funding is provided?
At pre-doctoral/entry level, the fellowship provides a personal salary for the fellow
(up to but not including a consultant’s salary), research training support grant of up
to £15,000 per year, plus well justified animal costs and Overseas/2nd UK
Centre/Industrial
Placement costs w. At post-doctoral level, the fellowship provides a personal salary
for the fellow (up to but not including a consultant’s salary) and the full economic
costs of the project.

4.00pm on Friday 17 September 2010.

any of our schemes and all fellowships may be held part-time to accommodate
domestic responsibilities.
