Dave started riding around age 9 on his Uncle’s farm at Russell’s Flat, Mid Canterbury. His first pony was a little black one called “McFlintock” He rode on and off over the years, but his involvement with riding and breeding Appaloosa Horses was some what of an epiphany. About 20 years ago Dave was literally dying in hospital in a ward where all the patients around him were dying. He and his wife Lyn got to talking about life and regrets and Dave stated that he “Always wanted to own an Appy”. Of course the doctors found a treatment for Dave and he is alive and with us today. Dave bought his first Appaloosa soon after, a lovely horse called P & R Whispering Gold off Rae Mutch. Dave was hooked! He and Lyn now have Double A Appaloosa Stud near Amberley, North Canterbury. “Delta” was his first broodmare whom his grand-daughter, Isabella, now rides, and Dave’s older grand-daughter, Alex, rides Delta’s baby – “Star”, with huge success. Dave’s favourite quote: “ If it is to be, then it’s up to me.” He also states ( tongue in cheek), “ A horse without spots is like a night sky without stars.” Thanks Dave for being so passionate about your horses and such an asset to the Christchurch Western Riding Club. ____________________________00oo00_________________________ If you would like to try something a little different and fun for both you and your horse, then have a look at Cowboy Challenge.
