Date of Establishment: 1873
Punjab University Library was established in 1873 as Punjab University
College Library. The Punjab University College raised to the status of a
University in 1882 under the Punjab University act no. XIX of 1882 which was
published on the gazette of India dated 7th October 1882.
This is the largest library of Pakistan with possessing 21 personal
collections of rare books and manuscripts of eminent historians and research
scholars and its rich manuscripts section is consist of 24000 manuscripts which
are written on paper and palm leave (catalogues are available on our website
www.pulibrary.edu.pk).
A major part of manuscripts consist of Sanskrit. Which belongs to
Buddhism? Library possesses about 1, 50,000 rare books printed in 17 th, 18th
and 19th centuries. The library is not only preserving but also disseminating
information; sharing the knowledge and digitizing the material which is in danger
of disappearing.

Contribution of Punjab University Library to the preservation, conservation
and accessibility of documentary heritage.
. Punjab University Library has been preserving and disseminating the
documentary heritage for more than one hundred years. Punjab University
Library possesses 1, 50,000 rare books and 24000 manuscripts. This collection
contains material in all the disciplines. Punjab university library is preserving and
disseminating this material through the following ways:

Punjab University Library possesses rich rare books and manuscript
collection related to all the disciplines, so local, international students and
research scholars visit to acquire information relevant to their research
Punjab University Library, since its existence (1873) has collected a valuable
documentary heritage. 21 valuable personal collections of eminent scholars, and
historians were received and preserved; a rich manuscript collection is also its
treasury. Particularly the collection on Buddhist school of thoughts called
Woolner Collection (manuscripts written on paper and palm leave), is
remarkable addition in manuscript collection. Punjab University Library has
become a rich reference source for local and international scholars.
Punjab University Library is not only preserving this material with best of its
efforts but also providing services to all types of users. It is providing services to
scholars and information seekers around the world. So we can say Punjab
University Library is preserving the documentary heritage and making possible
accessibility of rare material to the common people.

Impact of contribution to the preservation and accessibility.
The importance of libraries in our society “specifically to save the
documentary heritage that it's in danger of disappearing."
The stakes are high, from a social, cultural and economic point of view.
Libraries play a fundamental role in our society. They are the collectors and
stewards of our heritage; they are organizers of the knowledge in the books
they collect – adding value by cataloguing, classifying and describing them;
and, as public institutions, they assure equality of access for all citizens. They
take the knowledge of the past and present, and lay it down for the future.
Libraries play many roles generally to Store the Documentary heritage,
Storage of Cultural heritage, processing the records, to create a link between
generations, Fulfillment of User needs, to help the people in self education
and research.
So the library is a source of spiritual nourishment and preservation and
conservation is compulsory to store this heritage for better accessibility.

Utilization Jikji Award
Use of Jikji prize to maintain / upgrade library collection and
services. Jikji award will help us for the Preservation of documentary
heritage, Dissemination and sharing the information through out the world.
