BOSTON YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS’
REPERTORY ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM MAY 2
BOSTON – April 14, 2010…The Repertory Orchestra (REP), one of the six orchestras that
comprise the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras (BYSO), will perform on Sunday, May 2, 2010,
3 pm, at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University. Repertory Orchestra is conducted by
Joel Bard. A list of the players, along with their hometowns and schools follows.

The Repertory Orchestra is an advanced, full symphonic orchestra composed of 110 players of
excellent technical and musical ability. Repertory Orchestra has performed in some of Boston's
most prestigious venues including Symphony Hall, Sanders Theatre at Harvard University,
Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory and the Tsai Performance Center at Boston
University.
During the season, all members participate in one of two chamber orchestras, Repertory
Sinfonietta and Repertory Camerata, the latter of which is conducted by John Holland. There
they explore music of the classical period, including great works by Haydn, Mozart and
Beethoven. By studying this repertoire as part of these chamber orchestras, Repertory Orchestra
members develop specific techniques of ensemble playing and musical phrasing to a degree they
may not otherwise experience within the larger orchestra.
About Joel Bard
Joel Bard has been conductor of the Repertory Orchestra since 1988. Dr. Bard received his Master
of Music in conducting from the Juilliard School. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland
Institute of Music, where he studied oboe under John Mack, former principal oboist of the Cleveland
Orchestra. Also active as a biochemist involved in rational drug design, he received his Ph.D. from
Harvard University and is currently a research scientist with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.
About John Holland
John Holland has been with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras since 2005 and this is his
third season as conductor of the Repertory Orchestra Camerata. He received both Bachelor and
Master of Music Degrees from New England Conservatory, and graduated with Academic Honors
and Distinction in Performance, in 2000 and 2002 respectively. Mr. Holland has performed
regularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and orchestral engagements include
performances with the Boston Pops, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of
Boston, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Holland is a member
of the faculty of the Indian Hill Music School.
About Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras
The BYSO consists of approximately 420 students representing more than 120 communities from
the New England area. The BYSO is widely regarded as one of the country's finest youth
orchestras and is recognized nationally as a model music and arts education organization. Since
its inception in 1958 at Boston University, the BYSO continues to achieve the highest artistic
