Ordering the National Avian Bowl Study Manual The Avian Bowl Study Manual is a large document (some 200 pages). Your Editor and her National Avian Bowl Co-Chair (Dr. Mickey Hall) have compiled the study manual from Cooperative Extension and poultry industry publications. Annually, your Editor suggests the study sections for the following year and these are approved by the National Poultry Extension Specialists’ Committee. For new Avian Bowl Coaches: you purchase the manual ONCE and then use it for years to come. It is an excellent source of information for Club meetings and to address practical poultry questions. You will use it for more than just Avian Bowl preparation. The 2009 version of the National Avian Bowl Manual is available from the Clemson University Bulletin Room. The cost is $15.00 per copy and may be ordered online using either a VISA or Master card by going to the following URL: http://cufan.clemson.edu/olos/ Payment should only be for $15.00 per copy. Greater California Society of Poultry Fanciers’ (GCSPF) Show Once again, the GCSPF is hosting its annual show at the Big Fresno Fairgrounds, Sat., February 20th. I am honored that the Club has invited me to judge their Poultry Showmanship Classes and Avian Bowl. I anticipate that the Showmanship Classes will be among the largest of the year. You must pre-register for Showmanship. For information on the event and showmanship registration, go to the Club website www.gcspf.com or call Youth Program Coordinator, Mrs. Yvette Stephens (559 - 2977306). The show will be an excellent opportunity to get some stiff Avian Bowl competition in before the State Qualifier. Teams must pre-register. Entries forms are available by leaving a voice mail at your Editor’s number (760 699-5078) or writing her at 1775 E. Palm Canyon Dr., Suite 110 - #129, Palm Springs, California 92264. Poultry Judging Qualifier Dropped Developing, staging, and hosting state qualifiers involves a great deal of work and expenditure of funds. Poultry Judging in California has never enjoyed the level of participation of Avian Bowl. With the retirement of Dr. Ralph Ernst and continuing declines in staffing and budgets, it has become impossible to continue the Poultry Judging Qualifier. A few of you have become enthusiastic about Poultry Judging. I encourage you to continue sharing that information with your members. I thank those of you reading this who are thinking, “Well, I’d volunteer to help Dr. B put this on.” Again, thank you, but I cannot accept. The University of California only promotes activities that it can support with its own academic expertise and time. Deep appreciation is expressed to the Officers and members of the GCSPF. The Club generously provided a Poultry Judging Qualifier venue for many years.
