Chapter Meeting Tuesday January 21, 2014 Masonic Lodge 480 Greenway Road Henderson NV 89015 Dinner at 6:00 pm Meeting starts at 7:00 PM Next E Board Meeting Monday February 10, 2014 Commanders Remarks Here we are starting a new year, a year older and hopefully a year wiser. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday celebrating with family and friends. As always, let us never forget to keep in our thoughts and prayers for our troops deployed around the globe keeping us and our nation safe. Our Holiday Dinner was a success with about 90 people attending. It was good to see some of the old gang again. I wanted to have some entertainment at our Holiday Dinner so I went ahead and paid for the band out of my own pocket. Someone passed the hat around and a total of $144.00 was collected. I wasn't looking to be reimburse but thanks to all who contributed. The Executive Committeeman will resign from his position on Tuesday January 21, 2014. The Alternate Executive Committeeman is unable to step up due to the busy schedule he and his wife have for 2014. Therefore, we will have a Special Election at our meeting on Jan. 21, 2014. Please consider to run for this office. Also, in the next couple of months we have our annual elections. We will form a nomination committee and ask for your letter of intent which will be forwarded to the nomination committee. Your letter of intent should state your name and contact information , the position you are seeking and any other information you wish to submit about yourself to the nomination committee. On election day, the nomination committee will recommend to the membership their choice for each position. Keep in mind, anyone can be nominated from the floor. The E Board has decided to only have 1 party event a year. You will be asked to vote on our Holiday Dinner in December or our Annual BBQ taking place in October or June. The membership will choose which one at our meeting on Jan 21. Ramiro Parocua, Commander Page 1 of 5 Chaplains Corner It seemed that everyone enjoyed our Holiday Dinner. I would have like to have seen more of our Comrades attended, but some could not do to health. I went out of town the 19th of December to spend the Holiday with family. We almost got snowed in. We had to drive down to St. Louis 3 days early before the big Snow Storm hit, 10.6 inches of snow on the runways in St. Louis, Mo. We got back here on the 6th of Jan. I hope that everyone had as nice of Christmas and New Year as I did. I am looking forward to our January meeting to see all of you again. And I may have time to hear about your Holiday. Keep talking to these young Veterans and help them to get their VA benefits, try to get them to join the DAV. Chaplain Clyde Howe Adjutants Comments As already mentioned in the commanders remarks, I will be resigning my position as the Executive Committeeperson (EC) of Chapter 12. It was too much stress for me to continue working on Department business in addition to my chapter duties. The (EC) is a vital position where you represent the chapter at the Department (State) level. There are 13 voting members at the Department level those being Commander, Sr. Vice Cmdr., 1st Jr. Vice Cmdr., 2nd Jr Vice Cmdr., 3rd Jr Vice Cmdr., the Jr. Past Dept. Cmdr. (the outgoing Cmdr.), Judge Advocate, Chaplain, and the EC of each chapter in the state (5). They make decisions on expenditures, policies and other business to come before it. This is the first month we are posting our newsletter on the chapters website, nv.dav.org/12 This move will save the chapter hundreds of dollars a year in printing and postage cost. So far I have about 20 names listed for those members who do not have a computer and they will continue to receive the newsletter by the post office. I plan to have that list printed and post it at our next meeting. If you know people who do not have a computer and their name is not on my mailing list, please add their name and I will ensure that they are added to the mailing list. In the upcoming months, we will be having our annual Forget Me Not drive. We plan to split our drive with 3 or 4 days in early April and 3 or 4 days in Searchlight at the end of April to take advantage of the thousands of bikers that attend Laughlin's Annual River Run. In past years, attendance at this annual event drew estimated crowds of more than 50,000. Congratulations to members of chapter 12. Our chapter has been notified by National that we have met our membership goal for 2013-2014. Each year National sets the membership goals for each chapter across the nation. We have received a streamer for our flag. Page 2 of 5 DAV Black Mountain Unit 12 Unit Commanders Message HAPPY NEW YEAR!
