HANSON FAMILY HISTORY
The Hanson Family history begins in Norway with the births of the first generation parents. Briefly, their history is:
Andrew Karl Hanson
Born: 1/22/1865
Emigrated: 1869 - age 4
Citizenship applied for: 1890 ??
Married: 1890 ??
Died: 1955 - age 92
Hannah Ingeborg Hanson
Born: 6/5/1867
Confirmed:
Emigrated: 1888 - age 21
Citizenship applied for: 1890 ??
Married:
Died: 1933 - age 66
The sections below document more of the details for Andrew and Hannah's lives in Norway and America.
I. Andrew Karl Hanson
Andrew was born on January 22nd, 1865, in Norway to his parents:
Father:
Kjeld Hansen -- Born 1830
Mother:
Jensine Jensdatter -- Born 1844
while they resided on the Rans(/o)y Farm, Aurland Parish, and Sogn og Fjordane County, Norway.
He was given the name Ole Andreas Kjelsen as was the tradition in Norway, where a child's name was a given first
name (often a grandparent's name) with the father's name being the basis for the last name, either Kjellsen (for a
son) or Kjellsdatter (for a daughter).(Ref.1)
At the time of the 1865 Census, Ole Andreas was documented to be on the Ramsoy Farm, in Naeroy local
parish, as part of the Aurland Parish (ID 1421). He was age 1 at the time. Also listed are his
Father
Kjeld Hansen - age 33,
Mother
Jensine Jensdatter - age 22, and
Brother
Jens Kjelsen - age 4.
Also listed in the census was that they had 2 horses, 8 cattle, 13 sheep, 1 pig and potatoes and grain. (Ref. 2)
In 1869, Kjeld and Jensina emigrated to America from Bergen on Ship Alma, leaving port on May 3rd, 1869.
Kjeld was listed as age 36, Jensina age 24, Jens age 6, and a third son, Hans, age 2. Another son, Ole, had died just
before the family departed. (Ref. 3)
I could not find any record of how the Hanson Family got from Quebec to Minnesota, but a family story exists that
states Andrew fell off of the train while traveling and the train had to stop and back up to retrieve him !
The U.S. Censuses provide a snapshot in time every 10 years, and Minnesota provided their state census in
between (1875, 1885, 1895 and 1905). The 1890 U.S. Census was lost due to a fire in the storage area, and this
makes the Minnesota Censuses of 1885 and 1895 very valuable to cover the "lost" period from 1880 to 1900.
The first record of the Hanson Family in America is noted in the Minnesota Census of 1875, where Andrew is
aged 10 and living in Richland Township of Rice County, Minnesota, with his parents,
Kittie Hanson (father) -- Kjeld Hansen in Norway,
Celia Hanson (mother) -- Jensina Jensdatter in Norway,
James Hanson (brother) -- Jens, born in Norway,
Andrew Hanson -- Age 10 Born in Norway
Hans Hanson (brother) -- Hans, born in Norway,
Isabel Hanson (sister) -- born in Minnesota,
Lena Hanson (sister) -- born in Minnesota.
Ref. 4
In the 1880 U.S. Census, Andrew, now aged 16, is documented to be still living in Richland Township, Rice
County, Minnesota, with the family members listed below as:
Kittel Hanson (father) -- age 50, born in Norway,
Jensena E. Hanson (mother) -- age 37, born in Norway,
Andrew Hanson,
Hans Hanson (brother) -- age 12, born in Norway,
Essebell Hanson (sister) -- age 9, born in Minnesota,
Carolina Hanson (sister) -- age 7, born in Minnesota,
Ole Hanson (brother) -- age 5, born in Minnesota,
Charlie Hanson (brother) -- age 3, born in Minnesota,
Lewis Hanson (brother) -- just born in Minnesota.
Ref. 5
In a search 1885 MN Census, I could only find an Andrew Hanson in Clay County, probably as a hired hand. There
was no result in the search in Rice County where Andrew was living 5 years earlier. The record shows Andrew to
have been born in Norway, but in 1861 (age 24), not 1865. Maybe the records were a little mistakenly recorded.
There were about 15 young men and women employed. Ref 6.
The 1890 U.S. Census was burned while in storage and all records are lost forever.
Andrew and Hannah were married 1890 ref. 7
The Norway summary for Hannah is at the end of this section.
In the 1895 Minnesota Census, Andrew is documented to be in Clay County, Minnesota, 28 years old, with
family members noted to be:
Hanna (wife) -- age 24, born in Norway,
Emma (daughter) -- age 6, born in Minnesota,
Karl (son) -- age 4, born in Minnesota,
Tilda (daughter) -- age 1, born in Minnesota
Ref. 8
In the 1900 U.S Census, Andrew is documented as married, living in Georgetown & Kragnes Townships,
Clay County, Minnesota. He was age 35, had been married 10 years, and had the following dependents:
Hanna (wife)
age 30 born in Norway,
Emma (daughter)
age 10 born in Minnesota,
Carl (son)
age 8 born in Minnesota,
Tilly (daughter)
age 7 born in Minnesota,
Alfred (son)
age 4 born in Minnesota,
(Clara) Louise (daughter)
age 0 born in Minnesota.
Ref. 9
In the Minnesota Census of 1905, Andrew(now aged 40) has moved his family to Meadowbrook Township,
Cass County, Minnesota. The Mormon database does not list the family members in the listing, but on the
scanned document, all children Emma through Edith are specifically listed. Of interest, Andrew had been in
America 37 years (1869), and Hannah had been in America 18 years, 6 months (1887). The Hanson Family had
been in Cass county 1 year, 6 months from the time of the Census (June 2nd, 1905). This dates their move to
beginning of 1904.
Ref. 10
In the 1910 U.S. Census, Andrew(now aged 45) is still in Meadowbrook Township, Cass County with a
expanded family:
Hannah Hanson (wife)
age 43, born in Norway,
Emma (daughter)
age 19,
Carl (son)
age 18,
Tilla (daughter)
age 16,
Alfred (son)
age 14,
Arthur (son)
age 12,
Clara (daughter)
age 9,
Mabel (daughter)
age 7,
Edith (daughter)
age 5,
William (son)
age 3, erroneously recorded as Lillian - language problem ?
Myrtle (daughter)
age 1.
Ref. 11
Big changes are documented in the 1920 Census for Andrew and Hannah. They are older - 54 and 52
respectively - with the newest additional child of Walter (Born 1912). Also Emma, Carl, Tilla, and Arthur are
longer on the farm in Meadowbrook. Only Alfred (age 23), Clara (age 17), Mable (age 17), Edeth (sic) (age 15),
Myrtle (age 10) and Walter (age 8) are at home.
Ref 12.
no
When the 1930 U.S. Census was taken, Andrew are 10 years older (65 and 62, respectively) but only Myrtle
(age 21) and Walter (age 18) are left in residence. Ref. 13
On December 12, 1933, Hannah Passed away suddenly
Ref. 14
The last publicly available Census in 1940 for Andrew lists him on the original farm in Meadowbrook
Township, but with daughter Myrtle (age 31) and her husband Arthur (age 30) and their daughter, Inez (just
born) now managing the farm. The youngest son, Walter was killed in a tragic farm accident in 1937 (?).
Ref. 15
Andrew Karl died at the University Of Minnesota Hospital on April 23, 1955, at the age of 89. He had battled
prostate cancer which untreated had spread internally. Ref 16
Hannah Hanson was born on June 5th, 1867 in Malvik in Strinda on the Naesmark Farm. This location is east of
Trondheim along the Trondheim Fjord. She was baptised on August 4th, 1867. Her parents were:
Hans Johnsen - B. 1825 in Loms and
Ingeborg Anna Knudsdatter - B. 1825 in Ytter(o/)ens Parish - an island in Trodheim Fjord
Ref. 20
To learn about her parents, I found the 1865 Norway Census (two years before Hanna's birth). Hans Johnson is
listed at 40 years of age and having 1 cattle, 3 sheep, 5 goats, and small acerage of barley, oats, and potatoes. His
wife, Ingeborg, is also 40 years old. At the time of the census. Methe (age 5, later known as Sophie who emigrated
to Wisconsin) and Jorgen (age 1) are listed as their children. A stepdaughter from Hans, Elen, (age 18) is with them
also.
Ref. 21
However, a detailed search for children of Hans and Ingeborg finds a sad story. By 1865, they had given birth to
five children:
Mette Sophie (I)
Born 12/1/1856
Ole Jorgen (I)
Born 11/11/1858
Mette Sophie (II)
Born 3/20/1861
Helmar Gunerius
Born 1/19/1863
Ole Jorgen (II)
Born 1/19/1865
By 1865, only Ole Jorgen (II) and Mette Sophie (II) are still alive. Ref. 22
By searching the actual Ministers church records, I found that on March 13, 1863, Ole Jorgen (I) and
Helmar Gunerius both died. The ministers note is yet to be translated. Ref. 23
By 1875, when the next national Norway Census was conducted, Hans Johnsen's extended family is:
Hans Johnsen
Born 1826 in Lom
Ingeborg Anna Knudsdatter Born 1827 in Vaerran
Jorgen Hansen
Born 1865 in Malvik
Ingeborg Anna
Born 1867 - I think it should be Hanna, not Anna
Han's earlier daughter has married and has a daughter:
Ellen Hansdatter
Born 1848 in Mosvigen - a clue to Han's early life.
John Hansen Hovin born 1845 and Ellen's husband
Martha Johnsdatter Born 1874 in Malvik
Ref. 24
On October 31, 1888, Hanna Hansen emigrated from Trondheim for Ada, Minnesota, onboard ship Domino
(Allen Line). She was 21 years old, and gave Strinden as her residence. This would have been a steamship
which crossed the Atlantic in a few days. Ref. 25
Family stories indicate that Hanna was expecting to meet someone in Ada, but when she arrived, her "future
husband" was not there. She is said to have gotten a job at the hotel in town, and probably met Andrew when he
and his father were threshing grain in the Red River Valley.
