Winter: The season featured a positive NAO and PNA which resulted in
warm temperatures in December and record warmth into mid January. This
was followed by a positive PNA and negative to near neutral NAO and
caused bitter cold during the second half of January and February. In
December temperatures averaged 42.7F and tied with December 2001 as the
2nd warmest such month with above normal temperatures. In January,
temperatures averaged 36.7 and ranked as the 4th warmest such month on
record. The month also marked as the 3rd consecutive month with above
normal temperatures. In February, the temperature averaged 27.9F and
ranked as the 3rs coldest such month on record and the coldest since
1992. The season overall averaged 35.8F and ranked as the 8th warmest
such season on record and the warmest since last year. The season was
also the 4th consecutive such season with above normal temperatures.
Temperature extremes included 72F on January 6th (a record for the
month) and 8F on February 5th.
Precipitation in during the season was below normal. December ranked
as the 11th driest such month with January ranking as the 10th wettest
and February as the 5th driest months on record. The period JanuaryFebruary, 6.03 inches of precipitation was received and ranked as the
13th wettest such period on record and the wettest since 1997 and the 4th
consecutive such period with above normal precipitation. Precipitation
for the season totaled 8.47 inches and ranked as the 10th driest such
season on record and the driest since 1987-88. The most to fall in a 24
hour period was 2.04 inches during January 7th-8th. There were 30 days
with measurable precipitation. Snowfall was below normal with no snow
in December, the 1st such month on record. In January 4.0 inches and 5.4
inches in February. The season raked as the 8th least snowiest such
season on record, the least since 1979080.
