The United Kingdom
(UK) is a beautiful country with plenty of
wonderful monuments and views and great history. Lots of famous people
were born there. Some of them are just the part of the past, some are still
living today. Lots of well known artists came (or come) from UK.
Every country of UK has its own capital city, flag, symbols and patrons.
But all these countries speak English.
Three countries of UK make Great Britain. The national flag is the “Union
Jack”. It is made of the flags of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Most people in Great Britain are Protestant, but there are also some
Catholics and other religions.
Although this country is a member of European Union, it remained its
own currency - pound sterling (£).

They have also a unique lady to represent them - the queen. She lives in
Buckingham Palace near London.
The biggest part of The United Kingdom is England. It is big, beautiful
and interesting. It is divided into 5 parts: The North Country, The
Midlands, East Anglia, The Home Counties, The West Country.

Its patron is Saint George, and its symbol is a rose and lions.
You can find there some famous cities: London, Oxford, Cambridge
and Liverpool - The Beatles' home. If you saw the film Robin Hood you
may also know Nottingham...
Famous rivers are: The Thames and The Severn. You can find there high
mountains- Pennines and a flat area - Fens. And you can also find
Stonehenge - an ancient cultural centre.
English people are nice, intelligent and really devoted to their country
and The Royal Family.
The capital city is London. Its famous for plenty of interesting places and
monuments. Some of them you already know: Big Ben, Tower Bridge,
House of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Madame Tissaud's .
Another part of Great Britain is Scotland. Its capital city is Edinburgh (one
of the most elegant city in Europe), its symbol is a thistle and a patron is
Saint Andrew. Scotland has 3 parts: The Highlands, The Lowlands, The
Southern Uplands.

What is Scotland famous for? First of all - we know lots of jokes about
Scottish people. But in fact they are really friendly and good people.
There is a lovely lake in Scotland - Loch Ness and it is believed to contain
a monster- Nessie. There are also lots of mountains, sheep and romantic
castles.
Third and the wettest part of GB is Wales. The capital city is Cardiff,
and the most popular symbols are: leek, dragon and daffodil.
Its patron is Saint David. Welsh people call their country Cymru. They like
singing very much.
They speak English and Welsh.

Lots of people work in mines. The most beautiful part of Wales is
Snowdon with its great National Park.
Another part of United Kingdom (but not a part of Great Britain) is
Northern Ireland called Ulster. Its capital city is Belfast, the symbol is
shamrock and a patron is Saint Patrick. They speak English but some
people use Celtic, too. There are lots of Catholics and Protestants and they
often fight.
The Republic of Ireland is called EIRE.
Its capital city is Dublin and patron - Saint Patrick. Eire is famous for its
beer and unique music. Its a great country full of wonderful views.
