JONES ANIMAL HOSPITAL
VETERINARY ASSISTANT
STATUS: Full-time/ Team member will fill the role of Veterinary Assistant. All Veterinary Assistants have
the dual role of providing support for or covering of the Receptionist position.
SCHEDULE: Full time team members are scheduled at the discretion of management to meet the needs
of the facility. Full-time team members are not “promised” specific shifts.
DUTIES:
 Assist in the opening/closing of the facility
 Work with and under the direction of Technicians
 Provide or arrange for the completion of requested services
 Assist in the admission/discharge of patients
 Review and prepare educational forms/brochures
 Assist DVM’s
 Monitor pharmacy needs
 Prepare prescriptions
 Stock as needed
 Maintain lobby/exam room cleanliness
 Record all services performed on billing forms and client files
 Review DVM notes in order to properly chart services
 Enter recall codes as time allows
 Pass on all relevant information to next shift
 Review hospital chart
 Attend to the needs of all hospitalized and boarding pets
 Review all hospitalized and boarding pet files
 Assist in providing ordered medical care of hospitalized or boarding pets
 Prepare daily procedures as directed by DVM/Tech (surgeries and medical cases)
 Maintain treatment inventory controls
 Assist with client calls pertaining to performed lab or medical services
 Assist in laboratory functions
 Pass on all relevant information to all appropriate staff members
Telephone Communications
 Receive and/or re-direct incoming calls as necessary.
 Schedule appointments, treatments, dentals, surgeries, baths, and boarding arrangements.
 Provide status reports on hospitalized pets to their owners -- or re-direct call to proper staff or
doctors as necessary.
 Provide limited information using phone scripts and handouts on vaccines, medications, and
general pet care
Admitting Clients
 Receive incoming clients and prepare all forms, cage cards, etc.
 Prepare files for new clients, update files for existing ones
 Ensuring cleanliness of exam rooms
 Place clients in exam rooms at the appropriate times and to relay client needs to doctors
 Receive information for prescription refills and to follow protocols for proper filling of approved
prescription requests
 Be knowledgeable about and sell non-prescription supplies such as flea control products,
shampoos, etc.
 Ensure that information on admitted animals gets relayed to nursing, kennel, and doctor staff as
needed.
Releasing Patients
 Receive payment for services and ensure that computer invoices are input correctly.
 Ensure that all pets are cleaned and properly groomed when ready to be released.
 Relay instructions about the animal's care from doctors or nursing staff as needed.
 Discharge with any medications, supplies or personal belongings.
Administrative Duties
 Daily till management/consolidation
 Educate clients about pet behavior, diets, new puppy & kitten care, etc.
 Promote responsible pet care with clients
 Promote the services and programs of the hospital
 Perform general clerical and office duties: putting postage on mail, sending out new client
brochures, sending out vaccination reminders, preparing and calling procedures daily, and others
as needed.
 Pull and re-file paper medical records as requested.
 Assist as needed elsewhere in the hospital
 Work under direct supervision of the office manager/practice director.
 Project a cheerful demeanor and a professional, pleasant, compassionate, can-do, client
satisfaction attitude at all times
 Possess a working knowledge of the computer’s capabilities including invoicing, creating files, the
day sheet, and system back-up.
 Possess a thorough understanding of credit procedures/policies.
 Help clients who present for euthanasia in a compassionate, appropriate manner.
 Determine a patient’s vaccination schedule and communicate this to the owner.
 Refill prescriptions.
 Be familiar with post op instructions for routine procedures.
WAGES: National average for such a position is $10.50 per hour (information provided by
Salarysource.com.
BENEFITS: Full-time positions are eligible for medical coverage. Full-time employees do receive
discounted services for their PERSONAL pets, after successful completion of a probationary period.
APPLICATION PROCESS: A Jones Animal Hospital application is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Able to read and write the English language effectively. Must be able to multi-task front office operations
(counter & phone). Must be able to lift 40# bags of food. Must be able to work independently without
supervision. Must be able to work with the public, including making appointments, referrals, monetary
transactions, and customer relations. Should be able to understand and utilize basic computer functions.

OTHER:
Applicants must be willing to submit to pre-employment drug screening and all employees must be willing
to submit to drug screening without prior notice. While position announcement indicates the hours to be
filled, management reserves the right to alter the schedule to fulfill hospital needs. Full-time employees
will work hours assigned based on facility need. Failure to work scheduled shifts will constitute cause for
dismissal.
DISQUALIFICATION: Conviction of any crime involving the use, distribution, or manufacturing of narcotic
drugs (class IV’s).
