International Graduate Program 2007
Applications from Abroad
1. General Prospectus
Tokyo Institute of Technology (hereafter referred to as Tokyo Tech) inaugurated
an International Graduate Course on October 1, 1993. Its main purpose was to offer
overseas students an opportunity to enroll directly in the Master's or Doctoral programs
at Tokyo Tech.
And from October 1st, 2007, the International Graduate Course will change to a
new program, renamed as “International Graduate Program”.
There are various programs and courses in International Graduate program, so
the students will be able to find the program in which they would like to research and
study, to acquire broader knowledge and understanding, and to conduct an advanced
research in the long view.
In addition, this program will now make it possible for qualified students with
little or no knowledge of Japanese language to pursue a full degree-course of advanced
study in Tokyo Tech. The provision of such a course not only eliminates the prerequisite
of Japanese language, but also, thereby, significantly shortens the period of study. It can
thus be said that the course provides qualified overseas students with another option for
admission to graduate schools.
Since lectures and seminars will be given in English, it is no longer essential to
master the Japanese language.
However, since Japanese is the language of daily life, students in the course are
encouraged to attend a few Japanese classes per week on a regular basis for further
enrichment.
2. Programs
The International Graduate Program provides a choice of eight curricular
programs relating to thirty five departments of Tokyo Tech. There are three types of
programs in these eight programs; Master’s program, Doctoral program and Integrated
Doctoral Education program.
(1) Master's program (pre-Doctoral)
An enrolled student who obtains the designated number of credits within a
pre-determined course of study in his/her department after at least two years of
supervised study will be awarded a Master's degree after approval of his/her thesis and
a successful final examination.
(2) Doctoral program
An enrolled student who obtains the designated number of credits within a
pre-determined course of study in his/her department after at least three years of
supervised study will be awarded a Doctoral degree after approval of his/her thesis and
a successful final examination.

(3) Integrated Doctoral Education program.
This program is continuous from Master’s to Doctoral program and the students
will be able to obtain both of the Master’s Degree and Doctoral degree in these
programs.
