MRS. PRESIDENT’S CUP INTER-HOSTEL SPEECH CONTEST 2007 1. OBJECTIVES a) To arouse students’ awareness of fluent English speaking b) To enhance students’ interest in improving their English by means of fun activities and competition 2. CONTEST SCHEDULE Date : Time : Venue : Target Audience : Target No. of Audience : 3. 27 March 2007 (Tuesday) 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm Chan Tak Tai Auditorium All students and staff 300 - 400 FORMAT OF THE CONTEST To encourage more students to speak English well, a speech contest will be held in April. The six student hostels will be invited to take part in two sections: (1) Group and (2) Solo, so that students can participate in groups and/or individually. The Overall Championship of the speech contest will be decided by the total points gained by each hostel. A) Group Section Each hostel will form a group of no less than 10 contestants. Each group will perform a performance for no more than 4 minutes. Champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will be awarded. B) Solo Section Student residents and affiliated members of the 6 hostels whose mother tongue is not English can participate in the solo section. Students can select the speech on their own or from the recommended list provided by the organizer. The performance will be no more than 3 minutes. A maximum of three entries from each hostel will be allowed. Champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will be awarded. 4. ELIGIBILITY OF CONTESTENTS Group : a. Hostel residents (staff and students), hostel fellows and affiliated members. b. One group from each hostel. Solo : a. b. 7 February 2006 Students who are hostel residents and affiliated members whose mother tongue is not English. No more than 3 representatives from each hostel. 1 5. MARKING SCHEME A) Group Section (Total marks: 100 marks): Criteria: Pronunciation (able to pronounce words accurately) Intonation (pause, intonation, rhyme) Voice (able to pronounce clearly) Gesture (facial expression, eye contact, stance) Creativity Team spirit B) Solo Section (Total marks: 100 marks): Criteria: Pronunciation (able to pronounce words accurately) Intonation (pause, intonation, rhyme) Voice (able to pronounce clearly) Gesture (facial expression, eye contact, stance) Correctness (no hesitation, pause, omitted words, repeated words or note cards used) C) Calculation for Overall Championship Points will be given to each by the following system: Position Group Champion 10 st 1 Runner-up 6 nd 2 Runner-up 4 Each entry 2 Solo 5 3 2 1 e.g. Assuming Hostel X wins the Championship in the group section, and 2 contestants win the championship and 2nd runner-up in the solo section, their total points will therefore be as follows: A) Group Champion (10) + Entry (2) 12 points nd B) Solo Champion (5) + 2 Runner-up (2) + Entry (2) 9 points Total : 21 points 7 February 2006 2 6.
