The above chart is the current set-up of Quality Control Wing of the
Delhi Jal Board for monitoring the quality of water and Waste water round
the lock at Water Treatment Plants, Sewage Treatment Plants and in
Distribution system by 16 nos. of laboratories in Water side and 06 nos. in
Sewage side.
1.
Back Ground
Delhi Jal Board has two types of sources of water supply for Capital
city of Delhi viz;
(I) Surface Water
(a) River Yamuna
(b) Western Yamuna Canal
- A distributory of River Yamuna
(c) Upper Ganga Canal
- A distributory of River Ganga
(d) Bhakra Storage
- Through Western Yamuna Canal
(II) Ground Water
(a) Tube Wells
(b) Ranney Wells
Delhi Jal Board draws raw water from river Yamuna by harnessing it at
Wazirabad Barrage. Delhi also draws raw water at Bawana and Haiderpur
from Western Jamuna Canal – a distributory of River Yamuna and also from
Upper Ganga Canal –A distributory of River Ganga. At present, on an
average about 800 MGD of potable water is being produced by optimizing
production from various sources like River Yamuna, Bhakra Storage, Upper
Ganga Canal and Ground. The extent of Surface water treated at various
Water Treatment Plants is 90% and the remaining 10% supply is from Ground
water like Ranney Wells and Tube Wells.
2. Water Quality Assurance
Delhi Jal Board has set-up number of laboratories with adequate
facilities manned by qualified personnel for inspection and evaluating the
suitability of water supplies for public use as well as controlling the water
distribution system. Accordingly, Delhi Jal Board has 9 (nine) water testing
laboratories at Treatment Plants which examine and evaluate suitability of
water to be supplied to public and also control the Water Treatment
process round the Clock. The work of Quality Control (Laboratory) starts right
from examining raw water characteristics. This helps to determine the extent
of treatment needed and finally examination of Final water to ascertain
that it conforms to the prescribed Standards as per BIS norms.
In furtherance of monitoring the quality of raw water received at
Haiderpur, Nangloi and Bawana Treatment Plants, a field laboratory has
been set-up upstream of Western Jamuna Canal on the Bawana-Narela
Road. It helps to assess the raw water quality in advance by 6 to 8 hours
before the water reaches Treatment Plants.
3. Surveillance of Drinking water quality
For Surveillance of drinking water quality in distribution net work, 06
(six) modern Zonal laboratories have been set-up in NCT of Delhi. The Zonal
laboratories are detailed as under along with command areas :S.no. Name of laboratory

Zonal laboratories also check the quality of water from Ranney Wells
and Tube Wells in regard to Bacteriological and Chemical aspects in all
parts of Delhi. Each Zonal laboratory is preparing daily reports, which are
compiled and sent to various Public Health departments. These laboratories
have been equipped with suitable sampling Van etc.
Zonal water testing laboratories at Wazirabad, Haiderpur, Bhagirathi,
Okhla are testing chemical parameters and microbiological parameters in
raw waters reaching the Treatment Plants and also final treated water
leaving the treatment Plants on daily basis.
As such, the water being supplied by the Delhi Jal Board from all
available sources, is tested regularly right from the raw water stage up to
the consumer end for ensuring potability as per BIS drinking water
specifications 10500-1993. On an average, every day, about 300 water
samples are lifted from the distribution system including individual taps and
Public Stand Posts.
Apart from this, Delhi Jal Board is also getting tested the drinking
water being supplied to Delhiites from outside reputed agencies like,
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) for ensuring its
potability fortnightly for Eleven Physico-Chemical parameters and Two
Microbiological parameters. Eight toxic metals, Six pesticides residue and
Five Tri-Halo Methane formations are also being got tested on quarterly
basis from NEERI. In these fortnightly and quarterly tests, the level of all the
parameters have been found to be below the desirable limits as per Bureau
of Indian Standards, rather the contents have been much below the new
specifications laid down by BIS for packaged drinking water.
The list of these parameters is annexed at Annexure-I.
Agencies like, National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD)
and Health Department of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are also
testing independently the drinking water being supplied by the Delhi Jal
Board to ascertain its potability.
