Employment to date
January 2004 – present
Web Developer, Motor World, Stratford-upon-Avon
Hired to augment, update and market a car parts and accessories website created by
consultants at www.motor-world.co.uk . Finding an unreliable and partly non-functional
site in place, rewrote the entire project in stages, even upgrading the entire order process
without any down time. The back end of the order process is now available on a readonly basis to telephone operators so that they can see immediately what web customers
who call have bought, saving time and irritation all round.
The site now has customer recommendations, full customer tracking and an affiliate
architecture. Delayed product updates mean price changes and new products can be
entered months in advance, going live automatically when due. Leeched images are
tagged with prices and a quick link, turning bandwidth loss into sales. A rewrite engine
gives the impression that all brands are root-level pages, making memorable entry points
to the site and encouraging suppliers to set up links.
Bringing technical skills to other areas of the company, was responsible for the creation
of Motor World’s first useful intranet product image repository and search engine,
increasing efficiency and decimating demands on email storage for the Buying
department. Additionally, provided general technical support to the Stratford offices,
despite being part of the marketing department, as the Bradford-based IT department
struggled to stay on top of hardware and software migrations. Was brought in to advise
consultants hired to upgrade the store cash till WAN on the new product database
structure.
Negotiated reductions in website outgoings of over ten thousand pounds a year. Sold off
discontinued stock on eBay, sometimes reaching over retail price. Bought the .com
version of the domain name, which brought in extra sales worth more than double the
price paid in less than thirty days. Steered the company into a ten thousand pound search
engine marketing strategy, the results of which are expected to make a splash in the new
financial year.

Practice…byGAD!, a medical practice management system. Took responsibility for
keeping the network and Internet connection running.

was written, taught to staff and augmented repeatedly over a six-week period into a

reducing server cycles.

October 2001 - June 2002
Web Developer, Anglo Packaging, Brighton, UK
Shoehorned a sophisticated design into the constrictive Actinic 4 interface, which doesn’t
allow for the required navigation tabs or picture enlargements. This design was largely
my creation, and implemented in a short space of time. Extensive Javascript and CSS
was used to work around the strange, multi-template architecture of Actinic.
Photographed, touched up and installed photographs of around 800 carrier bags.
Effectively took responsibility for most content on the site, except for prices as supplied
by sales department. Trained staff to use Actinic and documented implementation of
Javascript for future development.
