IU 21 Student Services Committee Meeting 10/14/11 Rob Culp asks for information about the goals of the committee. The committee suggests that topics include psychologists, nursing, guidance, gifted, etc. Psychological Services o The IU 21 region school psychologists meeting was recently held and went well. Approximately 30 psychologists attended. The next meeting is scheduled for 12/2/11. The needs assessment indicated the request for psychologist specific trainings. Psychologists had questions about mentoring, especially for smaller districts. A list of tests within each district was compiled for shared usage. o Risk and threat assessment issues were discussed at the psychologist meeting. East Penn volunteered to share PSD’s templates. Other districts are willing to share as well and storing these templates electronically for shared usage was discussed today. An email list was generated. Keystone Commons information will be sent as a method of sharing information. Information about creating an account will be forwarded to the group. The group name will be student services. o RTII implementation was also discussed at the psychologist meeting and districts are at different stages of implementation at the elementary level. o NOVA training was discussed for the flight team training. Lovre’s training was approximate $15k. Only 7 individuals were signed up for the NOVA training. Questions were asked about how the NOVA model and the flight team model would be integrated. Keefer will present the option of presenting a single day training as an alternative at the next student services meeting. The NOVA training will be cancelled because of lack of interest. The hybrid training will be geared for psychologists, counselors, and social workers and Keefer will present an outline at the next meeting. o Webinar on October 25th at 3:30 on ER’s and RR’s at IU. Secondary Gifted Education o Weatherly SD is undergoing a gifted audit and Whitehall SD was audited the previous year. o It is important to highlight the SDI that they are receiving as a gifted student in an AP class, per a recent workshop at King, Spry. o Alternate assignments and enrichment work assignments (via differentiated instruction) have been other methods that districts have used to address the needs for gifted students. o College courses have been utilized. Health Services o The building nurse is responsible for obtaining the health records of students in IU classes. This is addressed in some districts by requiring IU students to register in the building, as a district student would. o At Northwestern Lehigh the bus drivers are trained regarding EpiPen administration and it is included in student’s plan. o There is some variation amongst districts regarding health plans versus Chapter 15 service agreements. o Do districts have a plan for immunizations and exclusions? Some districts plan to exclude students if multiple notifications have been provided to families. East Penn has a form letter to provide to families to give to doctors who are unaware of the new immunization requirements. Next meetings: January, March, May
